Think carefully with your dear child and decide for yourself the Best school your dear child will enjoy for the next 6 years. Indeed, a very important one and don’t take it lightly.

IF you have the time, try to make a trip down to the schools and mingle with the students. Only then will you have a better picture of what kind of students the school will produce and how your dear child will be like in 6 years’ time. It’s what you see and what you get, MHO. Can share with me after you attend?

So, what's your view on these two schools?

Sorry for posting this only now. Both are good schools that made our decision making tough.

There are a lot of information on the websites on respective school results and what the schools can offer. But we are considering the following factors, mainly based on our experience (\"feel\" ) during DSA/open house:

- Travel time and its convenience (DHS has school bus service for certain areas)

- School start hour (NJC: 7.40am most days, DHS: 8am most days)

- School culture/overall impression
** NJC: get to interact with students of various races/cultures. During the first DSA selection test, candidates were free to wear what they feel comfortable with which made my DD feel that school is rather flexible. But administration seemed less organized. Interview questions are \"Do you go for tuition? Do you go for these enrichment because you really like it or your parents want you to go?\" which we think they are looking for independent thinkers/learners. Existing students (mainly JH1) that we spoke to generally feedback that they like the boarding program most and not stressed during first year. They also enjoy the CAFE program where students get to choose one sports and one performing arts CCA during first year for \"trial\" before committing themselves to one in the subsequent year. Homework is manageable. There are plenty of opportunities in science research. Did not get to see their CCA/performances. Visited the AEP arts studio that displayed mainly painting, drawing and installation.

** DHS: students and school staff (not only teachers) greeted us with smile during open house which made my DD feel at home. Students that guided us during the school tour appeared more confident (they are more senior students comparing to the JH1 students in NJC open house). They are proud to be Dunmanian. The principal used English and Mandarin interchangeably. Did not get to chat with existing students but general feedback gathered from other friends are DHS workload is rather heavy but teachers are caring and willing to spend extra time to coach/help students. Did not get to stay long during open house, but they prepared a wide variety of activities including bazaar/game booths/performances. The DSA interview questions are rather standard and expected, e.g., how do you come to know about DHS, why do you choose DHS. But my DD was asked to respond in Mandarin on some questions which shows they regard the importance of being a proficient bilingual. School compound is nice and clean. We like the school's slogan \"快快乐乐上学来,平平安安回家去\".

zae

Reply to NJC vs DHS on Mon, 30 Sep 2013 13:41:11 GMT

It is good that parents can offer pro n con for preferred school over the other n if relatives study there can share actual experiences, this will aid in better decision…
