But after repeated calls and email complaints and I believe some residents complained as well, they went knocking door to door and found out who the culprit was. Unfortunately, aside from telling their family members about what the person has been doing and seeking their co-operation, there is nothing much anyone can do about it. Ours started about 2 years ago when a new neighbour shifted in downstairs. We now keep our windows shut and have installed air filters in every room. Spoke to them twice already but smoke follows the wind and generally in the upwards direction. As I am typing this, I am made aware of the smoker waking up. The smell comes before the sound of toilet activities. Sigh…

The no-smoking developments at Nee Soon South is encouraging. But I think we need to create a new frontier in the home arena if we (or our children) get to enjoy healthy air at home again. The authorities have always cited that smokers have the right to smoke within their own premises. We should push the message that we respect their rights to do whatever they want, but the caveat is that they should not adversely affect their neighbours. It is NOT a smokers vs non-smokers in the public domain; rather it’s one individual’s action against another individual (or family) suffering. We non-smokers should have the right to clean healthy air too. Ditto approach for oily smoke, dripping laundry, incense, curry smell etc.

The 14% proportion of smokers is often cited perhaps as ‘evidence’ that the problem is contained. But the effect of those 14% are much more than the number suggests.

Sorry for the seeming rant but this is Recess time. Thanks for reading and hope to gather some momentum to push for positive change. It may mean that smokers can no longer smoke at their window and (hopefully) have to filter their air, but it’s no different from anti-littering or anti-factory pollution requirements to contain the transgressor at the source.

I was hesitant to buy my unit at the time of visit but my mum said this flag is a good one that can ward off all evils and so I just bought lah!

I tried to research who are the 五将 in the flag but then cant find any info.
