The soup kitchen looks like a very interesting idea. Is there a minimum age for our children to be able to help out there. I’m thinking that it’s quite meaningful and interesting…better than playing computer games all day

If your dd's enjoy crafts,

- buy a ball of yarn and a crochet needle from Daiso and learn how to crochet from youtube - lots of excellent beginner tutorials;
- buy embroidery threads from Daiso and learn how to make friendship bracelets, again from youtube, to give as presents to friends for christmas.

There's a soup kitchen called \"Willing Hearts\" and they need volunteers to prep ingredients, cook, pack etc. every day. I have never helped out there before, but my friend posts about her volunteer experience there on FB occasionally. Here's an excerpt from their website about volunteering:

Our Soup Kitchen operates daily from 6:00am to 4:00pm and is located at:

#04-06 Cideco Building
50 Genting Lane
Singapore 349558

We are a 10-minute walk from the Potong Pasir MRT Station (North-East Line). For those who drive, parking is available within the Cideco Industrial Building Complex. Alternatively URA public parking is available along Genting Lane.

Unless you have a big group, you need not inform us in advance of your visit. We do not have a regular roster for our volunteers so you have the flexibility of helping on the day and at a time of your convenience)

Wow, you are so fortunate!

My DDs don’t like to cook. They like baking, but can’t do everyday. Once a while we baked, but the whole kitchen was in a mess.
Think she is calling her friends over instead of going out (Cos I said she can go out with friends only twice this holiday, but never say her friends cannot come many times). Sigh! Can’t win her these days!

I got my 14yr old DS to plan, buy cook lunch and dinner for the family..gave him a fixed budget per wk and let him run this part... shall c how he perform...
Hopefully still can put edible food on the table
Sounds interesting for a 14 year old.. Your son can cook well?

Still learning... but he does have the interest... that's why this is one item I can get him to relieve me on...

I think it really depends on individual situation. It would depend on where, what they are doing, how long they spend outside, how much money they spend etc. If there are no siblings at home or the siblings don't do much together, spending more time with friends might be good.

What is fun for a teenager?

Depends on the teenager! One of my daughters is happy to be left at home with books and computer. The other one's definition of 'fun' is anything she can do with friends. I am considering looking for some volunteer activities for them. I'll leave them to figure out what else they want to do.

My DD1’s holi starts 2 Nov. No school today and she slept till 11am. Sch has non-academic activities for them next wk, but after that, I’m scared that she will "rot" at home (crouch potato -read novels and watch Korean drama whole day).

DD2 only P4 has more activities than her during holi (2 friends’ birthday parties, school’s camp, learning camp, friends’ sleepover)!
What is fun for a teenager?

My dd is also very bored after the exams .. I wonder how can we survive for the next 2more months of holidays.

Is she interested in crafts or cooking? My daughter is still busy with school stuff until mid-Nov, but I am preparing ideas for after that. She has expressed interest in learning how to use a sewing machine, and she wants to try baking cakes and cookies for Christmas. Christmas is a good reason to make cards, presents etc. And she loves to read, so she can go to the library as often as she wants. I'm also thinking of making a list of places that she could go and explore with friends - maybe museums, Esplanade, some of the park connectors etc.

I wonder if there are volunteer opportunities for teenagers that they can be involved in during the school holidays? Schools organise stuff but usually during term time when kids are busier. Holidays are a good time for them to do things like helping to clean homes or outdoor areas, maybe organising a garage sale or bake sale etc. I would be happy to hear of some activties that my kids might be able to get involved in.

Nearly so, I think. Maybe a bit later? My daughter's last day (IP school) is 1 Nov, but she has already finished exams and is doing non-academic stuff already.

same here.... why do they end school so early? rush the syllabus... SA2 btw mid to end sep then whole end year v free... haiz...

I think it's because 'O' levels have been moved earlier to avoid the 'first 3 mths' issue in JC. 'O' levels used to be in Nov with results released in March. Since the Sec 1-3 kids need to be out of school by the start of the 'O' levels, everything moves earlier.

currently he is asking for about once a week. so it's ok for me... he goes back to school to play basketball and soccer with his friends though... very into sports.. but still complains v bored... i am also thinking how to fill his time...
