Not with the "others are doing it so should I" mindset.

Risk appetite, reasons for investments, time horizon are key considerations. Apart from that one important factor would be discipline.

I have seen people starting out on their own investments and was doing well. However when certain life events happen or they have a certain change of plans, their investments were placed on hold. Or worst, withdraw a big chunk out from their portfolio. But they will still be turning down professional advice.

Sometimes we need a mirror to keep ourselves in line, we may think that our hair is nicely done, but in fact failed to realise that at the back our hair might be in a mess. This can be related to our personal portfolios.

Of course I am not saying it is not possible to do it, it is in fact quite possible. But skills and knowledge will have to come with it.

But like anything, there will be a risk of not getting any compensation if your employer has a truly valid reason (or is able to come up with one in his defence).
