DD saw the Miley ‘Wrecking Ball’ MTV as well as the VMA performance. She and her friends were talking about it and we discussed it as well. In fact DD was the one who showed me the MTV and told me that the song is nice but the MTV spoilt it. She likes the Katy Perry ‘Roar’ MTV now and everyday in the shower she is ‘roaring’ away. We also talked about how the pop star that they see on TV and read about on all sorts of media may not be that kind of a person in reality.

Both kiddos asked me why these pop singers like to use vulgar language in their songs and we also talked about how these songs also have supposed ‘clean’ versions and whether it is right to use those ‘clean’ words in their normal conversation or not.

I told them language aside, listen to the songs and try to decipher what the singer is singing about.

I cannot shield them from all undesirable stuff out there so the best thing to do is to teach them the correct response to such things. To discern for themselves if certain things are ok to follow and others not. At the end of the day, not to be so easily influenced by all these.

Personally, I listen to a wide range of stuff. Problem is half the time I have no idea who the singer is or what the name of the song is.
