They get to try out a new sport each term and at the end of the term there was an interclass game. This year they did softball and basketball and I think there was rhythmic gymnastics as well. Not sure what else but I think it was track & field as dd was talking about throwing a javelin and doing high jump.

Most pr sch kids are not sedentary by nature. Given a chance you will see most of them dashing here and there. At recess time, wolfing down their food as quickly as they can so that they can go and play catch with their friends. If not forced to walk at a normal pace, they will be running everywhere.

Anyone remember what we do when we reach our schools last time. Were we made to sit in the assembly area to read or were we allowed to play? I remember all the hopscotch, skipping, dog and bone games that we play, even badminton and gymnastics.

Acquiring fundamental movement skills will be the focus in primary school, while secondary school students will develop skills in at least six physical activities and sports.
Providing Useful Feedback in School

The new PE assessment method will include:

Participation level in PE lessons
Attainment in a range of physical activities
Values and attitudes demonstrated
National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA)
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Self-directed physical activities with family and friends

From 2014, students will take the NAPFA test on alternate years instead of annually, starting from Primary 4 (i.e. Primary 4 and 6, Secondary 2 and 4/5, and at JC2/MI 3). This change will free up more curriculum time for sports and games, to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle that can be sustained after schooling years.

Holistic Assessment for PE

Primary Schools will focus on helping students acquire fundamental movement skills, which will help to minimise chances of injury.

\"Prolonged sitting is now the new smoking,\" said Mr Michael Chia, Professor of Paediatric Exercise Physiology at the National Institute of Education.

\"In today's context, there is compelling evidence from many international studies, including those of Singapore, to show that young people and adults are increasingly sedentary,\" said Professor Chia, who explained that while one cigarette shortens your lifespan by 12 minutes, prolonged sitting shortens it by 11 minutes.

The new assessment method will enable schools to provide parents with useful feedback. Students will be assessed on their attainment levels in various sports and games, which cannot be measured by a fitness test. For example, in basketball, teachers will observe students' ability to pass and receive a ball, as well as their ability to run into space, or even create space. The excitement and motivation to win a game also pushes students to run a little faster or jump a little higher.

Holistic Assessment for PE

Professor Michael Chia, Professor of Paediatric Exercise Physiology at the National Institute of Education, has been working with the Ministry of Education to develop a Holistic Assessment that will provide meaningful feedback to parents and students.

Teachers will also observe if the student is actively participating or reluctant, whether the student is resilient or gives up easily and how the student works with others during a game.

\"It can be an eye-opener because we all have different personas in different settings,\" said Professor Chia.

To encourage an active lifestyle beyond lesson times, students will also give a one-line report on any physical activities that they do outside of school with their families and friends.

\"When they hear the rest of their peers doing the same thing, it sets them thinking about doing the same,\" said the Principal of Yio Chu Kang Primary School, Mrs Teo Whye Choo.

At Yio Chu Kang Primary School, students learn sports such as volleyball, badminton, handball and many others. A \"Let's Play\" corner was also set up to let students borrow sports equipment outside of PE lesson time.
Changing Habits at Home

Research shows that multi-agency efforts are required for behavioural change. This means involving not just the schools, but families and other social support groups.

Holistic Assessment for PE

Students will learn more sports and games, which can be played together with family and friends.

\"My family usually goes out for jogs and cycling,\" said Muhammad Aqil Dany, a Primary 4 student.

Students' fitness and health will be more sustainable when families participate together, but this also means making an effort to change our routines. Perhaps when planning for family holidays, parents can include a bit of trekking or camping, which students learn during the Outdoor Education component of the new syllabus. Or if planning for a family barbecue, include activities like cycling or a game of frisbee!

Parent Support Groups could also organise physical activities that encourage bonding, such as football.

Professor Chia also shared that exercising metabolises stress, rendering it less harmful, and fitness also increases one's attention span. By changing the way PE is conducted and assessed, students will be given a more holistic education to support them in living a fit and healthy lifestyle in the years ahead.

jedamum

Reply to Students to take NAPFA test in alternate years from 2014 on Fri, 08 Nov 2013 07:39:46 GMT

jetsetter:

SAHM_TAN:
A neighbourhood school that I know has international dance as CCA.

International dance consider as exercise too right ?

I think neighbourhood schools also have chance for glam glam oral report

thought key objective is to let them do sports with family (friends are secondary)...

The parents may take part in dancing becos of the oral report. Roller blading, swimming, playing soccer, shooting hoops, cycling, etc. But now that we have to give a report, my mummy tell us we need to prepare for the report. We need to think about what we want to say, then we need to write it out, then we need to memorise and after that we need to practise presenting.
