I have been a JC student myself not too long ago, and our principal loves to show us statistics of how our cohort performed in all the respective subjects. Even she knows it herself that the trend has always been that majority of the students will score really badly in school exams, and by badly I mean failing (S or U grade) and then bounced up in the A levels.

Of course, with consistent hard work, one is able to pass JC exams, and even score an A for it, but I'm just saying that the bulk of students just doesn't. Be sure to understand that results, good or bad, are just part of the package that school provides, and it's not substantially indicative of your child's academic abilities.

My advice is, don't give up on your child. Keep him/her motivated by giving encouragement, and sharing with them that you understand that it's difficult to do well. If you decide to engage a tutor, please do find out what is the problem that your child is facing in that subject. It can be caused by a variety of reasons, like not able to understand the teacher, can't catch up with the pace etc. Then let your tutor know all these problems, and see whether he/she has the abilities to tackle these areas.

Last but not least, as I operate a tutor agency, if any of the parents do need to engage a tutor, I hope you'll consider ReachTutor. Our mission is to provide the most efficient service to students/parents and aid them in finding the best tutor that is within their available budget and timings at no extra cost! Being a tutor myself, I understand how parents care for their children and want them to do well. Hence, my goal is to find the best tutor to share your child's academic woes, and not to close deals quickly.

For parents who are interested, you may want to visit http://www.reachtutor.com/ and fill up the form, or drop me a message or call me :?: at 91702638 for more details.

:thankyou:

ReachTutor

Reply to Help Needed Urgently on Thu, 19 Dec 2013 23:50:30 GMT

Hi,

First of all, I must say JC curriculum is not easy, as it is specifically designed for the top 20% of secondary school graduates in Singapore.

Regarding the retaining rate, I think this year MOE has made it very strict to all the JCs. Those top JCs, like RJC, HCJC, VJC, NJC … should not have more than 2% of retainees; JCs like IJC, YJC should not have more than 20%; and other JCs are having different rates capped at the percentage between 2% and 20% respectively. These rates are directly related to the COP of these JCs, in general, if a JC’s intake is better, the retaining rate should be lower.

If your child has been working relatively hard comparing to his/her classmates but still cannot meet the promo criteria, I would recommend repeating JC1 (or consider to transfer to a poly). A marginal promotion may not help your child and it is very likely for a student as such to fail to attain quality grades for admissions to local universities.

If you child has been playful to a certain extent and failed to pass the promo exams marginally, he/she should aim to clear the re-exam as far as possible. Of course, a change in attitude is a must for JC2 studies.

From a JC maths teacher

That is one of the reasons that justifies the increasing trend of parents hiring tutors (primary, secondary and tertiary), because tuition does help a lot.

However, the harsh reality is that, as they transit from JC to university next time, they will realise that some lecturers in university may also not be able to explain sufficiently clear (personal experience + observation from my peers in other courses). What are they going to do then?

However, if you are really left with no choice, I do admit that tuition is the last resort. It is still better to get better grades in JC so that there are more courses to choose from in university

Tuition is more necessary becos of the final most important exams - O n A Levels. Its either you make it or don't - just like PSLE. In the U, its different, you do not have to sit for just 1 important exam to determine your future.

zbear

Reply to Help Needed Urgently on Fri, 13 Dec 2013 19:06:34 GMT

Hi,

I agree that good tuition can help in allowing your child to understand the concepts better. At the same time, we r also desperately finding a good tutor to teach her H2 Math. We prefer a female tutor. Would appreciate any recommendation.
