I feel the showering part is ok. There is nothing wrong with the traditional thinking, we are all brought up in different generations and our thoughts differ.


But like what you guys have mentioned, I feel that there should be respect for the family members in the house too. However I don’t think a lecture should be the right thing. As he is age 25, he should be closer to the family and is more open to private heart to heart talk. A talk with him at a level of a friend, and addressing his thoughts first seems better. Not directly arguing with him, but trying to understand him. When the swords and shields are down, it should be easier to bring up the respect for the family part.

Anyways I hope the issue is resolved?

Personally, I am ok with it. But I will not blatantly do it if my parents or his parents are against it.

Again, such things are not so much about the couple themselves but having the consideration for their parents or the people whom they are imposing upon.

They usually have no consideration for the feelings or opinions, especially of those much older than them. Their general take is the older folks are too fussy and conservative.


I would tell them off too, if I were in your shoes. Not so much against their open mindedness but their lack of consideration for the feelings of the old folks. Not everything is about them and them only, have a thought for the people around them as well.

This is speaking from my experience of working and dealing with under 25s as part of my job. I suppose you were right to share your uneasiness about it. But while they may not be paiseh, they might be sensitve. So point to note (to oneself!!) is that it is not what you say, it is how we say it. They are too old for a lecture about what to do in private - but courtesy would dictate discretion when they are in someone else’s house, in the company of young and old. Just my 2 cents.

You know my nephew and gf belong to the Y generation, the reaction that they gave me is Nothing Big Deal!

Not surprising the future young generation will be getting so \"open\". The Chinese values, culture etc gets diluted from generation to generation. Really a shame as a Chinese myself 😞 ....
