It usually takes the kids about 15-20 mins to warm up to a tutor they see only once a week and it takes that long for both to "catch-up" on what happened in school and what they did the previous lesson. Also recommended is a short toilet break in the middle.

For older kids, 2 hours is good. For some kids, short break is needed while others, no need. Some tutors use the short break to chat and get the child to respond more (e.g. practice speaking in Chinese). 1.5 hours is too short for older kids.

For example, a 10 year old child with one subject would probably only need 1.5 hours as young kids have shorter attention span. If there is are more than one subject being taken, a 2 hour lesson(with a short break in between) is advisable.

Actually, I think for the very young students (e.g. age 3), even 1.5 hours can be too long. But if they are older and have a good attention span, then 2 hours is worthwhile.

Of course, every child is different, so age alone cannot determine the best time. But in general, younger children would be better suited for shorter lessons, and older children are better suited for longer lessons.
