I understand that kiasuparents may not permit sharing of resources in this section and may move it to another section. It is never my intention to sell my materials here.
I came to this conclusion because it moved my thread of sharing P5 materials to another section.

2. I am sharing these materials which I use for my own students. Hence, I cannot and will not make the links permanent. If I make them permanent, anyone can access them anytime and make use of them other than to use them for their personal use.

Hope you can understand why this thread is discontinued. Thank you for your support.

At first, Mary had $180 more than Jeffrey. When she gave away 1/7 of her money to Jeffrey, she had $20 less than Jeffrey.
(a) How much had Mary at first?
(b) What was the ratio of Jeffrey’s original amount to Mary’s original amount?

This is an example of a question where one can explore the use of different heuristics.

As I am not able to draw models here, I shall demonstrate how one can use unit method and logical method here.

Unit method
_______Mary___Jeffrey
Before-->7u____7u-180
Change->-1u____+1u
After---> 6u____8u-180

8u - 180 - 6u --> 20
2u --> 180 + 20 = 200
1u --> 100
7u --> 700
(a) Mary had $700 at first.

700 - 180 : 700 = 520 : 700 = 26 : 35
(b) The ratio is 26 : 35.

Logical method
180 + 20 = 200
200/2 = 100
100 x 7 = 700
(a) Mary had $700 at first.

700 - 180 : 700 = 520 : 700 = 26 : 35
(b) The ratio is 26 : 35.

Note: The logical method is the fastest method here, but not necessarily the easiest method, unless one can understand the fact that when both you and a friend have an equal amount of money and you give your friend a certain amount of money, your friend is going to have double the amount more than you.

In other words, from $180 more to $20 less, the change is $200. Which means to say that Mary must have given $100 to Jeffrey to bring about the change.

Anyone solves this differently? Let's discuss.

angatheart

Reply to Preparing for 2014 PSLE Math on Tue, 17 Dec 2013 06:20:19 GMT

Unit 4 Data Analysis

This is a minor topic which includes graphs and pie charts.
