Try imagining that your are doing your favorite activity (maybe watching a K drama) and someone changes the channel.

A lot of it has to do with closure. Although as parents, our form of seeking closure is "2 hours is up, Stop.", closure for the kids is different. It could be to finish building this particular structure, or finish exploring a particular dungeon.

While I think it’s important to moderate, and control, be careful not to go too far. I’ve seen many young people now, living with restrictions and prohibitions to the point that they get stressed, or forget how to pursue their interests and passions as they grow up. On the other end of the spectrum, once parents release their control in their adulthood, they go full-blown addiction and don’t know how to control themselves, because they never learnt to control themselves.

I somewhat am recovering from gaming addiction which took away time from my forum surfing and other stuff. Even my kids complained about it. But as an adult, it took me only a few days of cold Turkey before I got over it. Plus a near crash in the system that threatened to wipe out the data in my server.

It began beginning this year when my kids introduced me to Mine craft. Oh. Though pocket edition, the endless possibility of creation in creative mode is addictive. I can’t believe my kids are so disciplined when I limited them to only ten mine craft minutes during psle year last year. What can you build in ten min ? My son said he is already well trained. My other son complained of my addiction too. I must stop.

Now I still MC daily. But about 30 min every night. The whole family joins in and I gave myself an excuse that it is for family bonding. Ha ha ha. We go survival mode and the kids are great in help. Don’t think I can survive without them. Offline, over dinner, we discussed about related stuff too. Amazed at how much they know. When nightfall, I am the most vunerable. The dad is a skilled "fighter" in other games so no problem fighting using a carrot. The younger one uses arrows and reckless. The older one is a user of elements, using both water and fire to combat the mobs. I am slow response anddies easily even with an iron sword and two backup stone swords in my inventory. Ha ha. We fight as a team, watching one another’s back.

It is fun…and because I need them to survive, I cant play when they are not around. Ha ha ha.

I allow them to access computers on Friday nights onwards to Sunday. When DS1 is on MC, he is on skype with his friends. As it is interactive, the boy will get very excited, talking loudly to his friends. I regretted letting him go on Skype. Playing the game itself is ok. There’s a time frame though - 2 hours each game and to them, 2 hours pass by too fast for them. Now, my sons do not watch TV anymore. They will go to YouTube to watch how people play MC. They have a favorite Youtuber. Anyways, my sons have controlled timing on MC, I also educated them on bad languages used in MC as well as computer game addiction. I think parental control here is very important.

If your kids have not gone to the level of skyping with friends to play MC, don’t let them!

It brings out their personal competitive spirit to outdo themselves every time they engage in that particular sport. Moreover they may feel good when they are one of the top performer in the sports section among their friends. Swimming and jogging may be a good start. Endorphin will make them feel better and lowers their level of anger I feel.

However if they are really very addicted to the games, perhaps it will be good to learn about the game from SupaSiMCraft’s post. Afterwhich, talk about the game and discuss purely about the game with your DC (do not talk about the bad effects of gaming and such yet). Ask them to teach you about the game when sitting beside them. Make jokes about the games and also praise them like "wow you mean you actually build things to defend yourself from the zombies? omg I think I will die in a day!!". Eventually after a few days of that, they will feel that you are actually "into the game" like them. That’s when it will be easier to slowly ask them to cut down on the game by using jokes and terms from the game? Like maybe 15mins before the end of the gaming session by saying "Dear, about time to stop in 15mins, rem to build that wall you was mentioning before the zombies get you." Over time I feel they might be more comfortable and felt that you’re not really commanding them, and that’s when you can have that heart to heart talk about why last time you were so against them playing computer games all day while relating to the bad effects.

Just my thoughts on this issue, personally I haven’t have any children so am not very sure about handling these situations. Hope I helped at least a little.

It started as a PC game and there are now versions for Apple and Android (\"Pocket Edition\"), as well as Xbox 360. PS3 and PS4 versions are in development.
-There is more to Minecraft than building. There are 2 main game modes on the PC edition, Survival and Creative. In Survival mode, the player has health and must gather resources to survive, like wood/stone to build a house. Later on, the player can go mining to find other materials like iron and make better tools. At night, monsters come out and they can hurt you, resulting in a decrease in health. If health reaches zero, the player dies.
In Creative mode, there is no health, so you cannot be killed by monsters, falling, starvation or other things that might kill you in Survival. You have infinite blocks and resources, and the ability to fly. Many players use Creative mode as a means to build large structures.
-It is possible to build machines. Redstone, one of the minerals, can be placed on the ground as wire, allowing a sort of current to be transmitted. When linked with certain objects like pistons, redstone current can make these things move.
-I think that Minecraft is addictive because there is simply so much to do!
I thought this is one of the better games that stretches their creativity & resourcefulness. I don't notice any increased agressive behaviour in ds since he started playing after PSLE. When I asked him to stop, he'll at most asked for a couple of minutes more to save the game & will happily put it away. It brings him much fun & he sometimes spends time thinking of how to create traps to prank other pp.

I think the game itself is alright.

sparks
