<![CDATA[Add extra baggage weight when buying maid's airticket?]]>I bought 40kg for my ex-maid and meals for her flight back to Yangoon. Yes, she overpacked too. It ended up with me helping her to repack her luggage. In fact, at the check in counter, the airline staff wants to weigh her carry on bag (overweight) but she let her pass.

I finally sent her packing after 4 months with us and when I told her that I had bought 15kg extra luggage for her out of good will and not to overpack, she turned around and asked why only 15kg. Up to you if you want to buy the extra luggage weight but do note that they tend to collect stuff from their friends for their relatives back in their village so your maid might end up with lots of stuff that are not hers. Mine had half a luggage filled with presents for her friend's relatives and actually exceeded the 15kgs that I bought for her. Thankfully, the lady at the check-in counter was really nice and closed her eyes to the extra 3kgs. 😓

My maid is going back for good at the end of this month so she is sending a box home separately of all the stuff she has been buying and collecting from here & there!

Her cousins asked her to take some stuff back but she has told them max 2-3kg.

all maids have some \"nonsense\" to us... my current maid... v hardworking... everytime forget this forget that... if it is not a routine, after 2 or 3 weeks she didn't do... then she forget... when i ask her she will say all along do like that.. haiz.... but then... on the other side... she is really v hardworking... treat my kids well. trying v hard to do well in her job.. just that she is not smart type (unlike my previous maids)...
if u ask me when she leaves or when she goes home leave if i would pay the extra luggage of 20kgs for her... i still will... so it depends when u weigh the good and bad of her... only yourself would be the best judge. 😉
Totally agree. If the maid is ok, can pay for the extra baggage but if she is a troublemaker, don see the need to reward bad behavior. Anyway, their salary is $500 no more the low $250. They are rich enough to buy their extra baggage.

Actually my maid really anyhow do things for me. She is very stubborn. Never do things right even after 2 years. She will say forget everytime when I question her. Changing maid is very hassle plus my husband don't support me so I tolerated her nonsense. This time she told me she is going back to get married so I take the opportunity to find new helper. Again, she ask me any meals inclusive when she fly budget airlines!

doryfish: she will come back to find another employer one lah...mine also gave this excuse, but in reality, she came back again...haha...

DO NOT renew her passport in SIngapore, cos she is gg to quit for good. Let her next employer do that do her.

I sent mine off on Silk Air, so she had 20kg, food as well as inflight entertainment. She was a nice maid with a scatterbrain.

PS: I forgot to add that I also paid for 1 box of her shopping loots to be shipped home via SingPost. That cut down some weight from her luggage.

This is especially so if you purchase your ticket late - I normally buy it close to the departure date as I need more clarity on my timetable. This is the case for my Indon maids - 30kg baggage allowance (though counter staff may allow up to 35kg free) and meal.


Excess baggage charges can be very steep when purchased at the airport instead of in advance. Should that happen, she will have to decide if she wants to pay for it or wants to discard her things. I usually tell my maids to take only the new things; they will discard most, if not all, the things they came with.

If she's Indon, the passport is now very cheap to renew here. Less than $100, is just $60+ if I remember correctly. Doubt that it would be much/ any cheaper to do it back home.
Not like years ago. The first time I renewed an Indon pp, it cost $300+ :yikes:

Otherwise she will just go back for a few weeks and come back immediately as an "experienced" maid. This was wha happened to my previous maid, though I didn’t have to renew her passport.


I bought 25kg for all my maids who have returned home, out of goodwill since it was supposed to be their last trip back and they would have bought stuff for their family.

It's cheaper for her to renew her passport in her home country than in Singapore.
