My dd started at age 5. At that time, I bought a new Yamaha, but low range, made in Japan, cost about $4.5K. This piano stayed with us for about 8 years. With regular maintenance (always on the heater and tunning), the piano was still reasonably good after 8 years. Last year, when there was a need to change to a better piano, I sold off this piano myself at about $2K (cannot rem the exact figure). Then after comparing Kawaii K8 and Yamaha YUS5, dd decided Kawai K8. At her stage, she was able to judge the touch and sound of the piano and since she preferred Kawaii K8, we got it. Me and hubby also felt that Kawaii sound was more mallow and stable than Yamaha YUS5. (It depends on individual hearing preference.) We strongly think that this piano is going to stay with her forever, there is no need to change anymore.

Hope the above is useful to your decision making. :celebrate:

daisyt

Reply to Kawaii K8 Vs Yamaha YUS5 on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 01:07:53 GMT

You have to listen to the sounds, look inside at the interior before you make final decision. On paper things may seem very easy, but what’s important also is if the piano has received regular maintenance and care, or if some recon work has been done.

It’s really not easy to come to a decision. that’s why at end of the day, hubby & I just threw up our hands and went to the nearest shop to get a 2nd hand model. For your reference, we ended up with an old U3 at 4K - also comes with warranty (in this case I made sure the guy included labour, parts and transport in his warranty card).

More established places may not include labour/transport in their warranty, so scrutinize this if it’s important to you.

Good luck in your hunting.

I’m new to this forum and would like to find out more about piano learning.

Few months ago, I’ve registered my 3.5 yrs old son to learn piano at M (a music school at Novena Square) and was allocated a Jap lady to teach him. But after several lessons, my boy seem to be learning nothing and I had a discussion with the teacher to find out the problem and on how to improve his playing.

I was told that most likely he’s lack of practicing at home and suggested to purchase a upright piano from Yamaha. Upon contacting a sale person from Plaza Sing, I was promoted to buy a Yamaha GUS5 (whopping $12,500, didn’t know piano can be pretty ex.) as it can be used from beginner to diploma (claimed to be very cost effective). After I’ve bought it, only later to realise that the problem lies with the Jap teacher as her accent was too difficult for my boy to understand.

Thus, inorder to salvage the piano learning route for my boy, I thought of withdrawing him from the school and have a home piano tutor to teach him. Will it be a good decision? (my worries are kids tends to slack and run about at home, any parent with similar past experience?)

Does anyone has a good home tutor (venue at Barker Road) to recommend for my little boy? (I strongly believe that a special chemistry must be required inorder to be able to interact with little children).

God bless!

All agreed that the Yamaha has lighter keys and Kawai has heavier keys and that Almost all prefer Kawai to the Yamaha due to the sound. There are 3 senior teachers that I spoke to that swears by Kawai because of its sound and their heavy keys - citing reasons as better training for the hands movement and strength and feel.

Maybe used to be true for older kawai piano models. Seem less obvious now. Hubby tested the new showroom pieces, kawai K3 K5 versus yamaha U1 U3, not much difference.

kawai new models keys are no longer that heavy. Heard from salesman that kawai lost many young learners to yamaha due to its heavier keys, so they actually made it lighter nowsaday.
For yamaha, they know it's a common critism of their light keys so they made it heavier nowsaday. Hence, difference not as substantial as before

Kawai sounds better according to hubby. My dd prefers yamaha keys. She said easier to play. So I guess there's still subtle difference in terms of touch, only young kids can notice. For me, either is fine as long as price tag is fine

sleepy
