I consider myself a pure Teochew.


Both my parents are pure Teochews - my dad's ancestors were from 普宁，while my mum's ancestors were from Tenghai (this is a teochew term, sorry dont know the Chinese or English wordings). So even though they are born in Singapore, the roots of the languge are very strong.

I grew up trained in speaking Teochew with my parents. Even my name is a very teochew name, and although it is really difficult for workplace colleagues to pronounce (because it is so teochew), I have still retained it without using any other English name. I still speak to my dad and my ah gous (aunties) in Teochew. I am married to a Hokkien so I miss those days of speaking to the elderly in pure Teochew cos speaking the language is very enjoyable.

Besides my extended family, I hardly find young teochews speaking the pure language nowadays. Its quite a pity.

Shall we start introducing dialect to our kid then? To preserve the chinese dialects...

But dialect has least functionalty in today's context. I hardly use dialect due to work purpose and now find that dialect words are harder to roll out from the toungue when need to speck with granny...
