In fact, he has asked if he should exit a couple of group chats as there was just too much time-wasting nonsense chats going on but he has so far stayed in to not seem anti-social.

I do have full access to my ds’ phone and am surprised that many parents with sec 1s and 2s need to "tell" their kids they checked their phones? It was a condition when I gave ds his first phone just before sec 1 that I have access to his phone anytime. He will have to show me some years of responsible use before he expects privacy. I think knowing that mummy checks does ensure he is more responsible in his replies. He voluntarily shows me msgs from friends he considers inappropriate and cant believe they posted such nonsense to the whole group. He asks me: "Wah, don’t their parents know what they are posting?"

When he does chat, it is usually 1-1 with a friend or small groups. We cant understand why kids need to respond to 30-40 classmates at once!

In future, you should reserve the right to inspect his phone, PC etc occasionally. Explain to him that it's for his own safety - and isn't he lucky that you saw the whatsapp this time. If you choose to act blur this time, still make the inspection rule explicit when you return the phone. Even better, get him to also agree to tell you whenever this kind of message or image is circulated. This sort of thing is likely to keep happening, and if nothing is done, kids will be influenced or even traumatised. We parents have a responsibility to our kids and their friends to step in when such things happen.

sharonkhoo

Reply to Sec school Whatsapp Content on Wed, 29 Jan 2014 01:30:27 GMT

Just tell him you looked at his phone without his permission and you are sorry about it. Talk to your DS openly on why you feel that such content is not appropriate to be circulated in such a manner.

Teenagers will naturally be curious about all these and I believe taking a more open approach might be better.

With the Internet, they will be exposed contents much more explicit than such cartoons. Might as well take this opportunity to address the issue on pornography.

AC_Power

Reply to Sec school Whatsapp Content on Tue, 28 Jan 2014 08:33:53 GMT

hmmm jap cartoon manga with unclothed girls n boys ><!!! very hesitant to even give him back the hp now
