Care to share tips of how she prepare for the test back then?

My dd's school is encouraging the students to sit for the test. Dd has the option to take either level 5 or 6. We are unsure if she should sit for the test at all. Any idea if there are real advantage in taking the test? Dd thinks Level 6 is beyond her ability. Any disadvantage to opt for Level 5 instead?

Thanks in advance

Both my daughters have taken the HSK Level 5, one in 2014 and the other in 2015. We felt it was necessary for them as they have been exempted from Chinese having been educated overseas until 2013 (they did learn some Chinese there, but they were approx P3-4 standard when they were already in sec school!). We just wanted them to have a qualification that shows they have a basic grasp of the language (and it was a chance to \"force\" them to learn a bit more.) I got them to do some prep, including downloading the mobile app on their phones to learn more vocab. They didn't do that well, but good enough that they have the cert.

I actually don't think it's much use for students who are taking Chinese in school as the standard in school is higher. I would say no point really working for Level 6.

sharonkhoo

Reply to HSK - Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi on Wed, 29 Mar 2017 01:49:44 GMT

bebebub:

slmkhoo:
My Sec 3 daughter will be taking the HSK level 5 later this year. So we didn't do much prep except going through with her some of the 100 questions sample paper which she brought back from school. Still waiting for her results.

Her Chinese teacher told her if the results are good, it can be used to apply for scholarship later on. It is the one and only standardized Chinese proficiency test recognised by China.

Good to have when applying for Peking Uni (level 6) or Tsinghua (level 5) but I am not sure if applicable to Singaporeans students since we are already proficient in Chinese!

lee_yl

Reply to HSK - Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi on Wed, 29 Mar 2017 01:05:07 GMT

slmkhoo:
My Sec 3 daughter will be taking the HSK level 5 later this year. I find the questions tough, too, because we do not speak Mandarin at the level that the Mainland Chinese do. So, they test terms that we seldom use. For a start, there are sample papers on the website. You may like to let your daughter try out the papers first.

qms

Reply to HSK - Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi on Fri, 14 Feb 2014 04:55:43 GMT

lovinglife:
汉语水平考试？What is this test about?

It's the Chinese equivalent of TOEFL - a test of Chinese for foreigners.
