Also during the Budget Statement, the Finance Minister will mention the amt of money given to students and i guess the students include poly

don't remember seeing any statement. my son has completed secondary school....if there is remaining money in edusave, i wonder if it can be used for poly.

Having to choose/change to a cheaper/foc cca could be an option if it does not deprive the child of his/her interest. Also, taking into consideration many need to work on their LEAPS.

But on the other hand, if an overseas trips are made 'compulsory' as its a programme integrated into the curriculum and has a weightage to the subject grade, do the family still have such say?
I guess every parent has to make a decision whether they are willing to \"just pay\" or make a stand. It may mean changing cca or even changing school. It may mean \"short-changing\" their kids too, but they have to believe that it's important to make that stand. But I don't think a school can make any trip compulsory, especially if it is expensive. If you want to, you can take it up with the school, and even with MOE if the school is unreasonable.

So far, nothing too expensive has been compulsory for my daughter. There is an optional overseas trip coming up this year which costs over $3K, and I've told her that we will not sponsor her for that one even though some of her friends are intending to sign up. I've asked her to try for one that goes to M'sia - much cheaper! The only benefit I see to either trip is the experience of going as a school group, and I don't see that going halfway around the world makes it any more beneficial. Nothing they learn on these trips is crucial, and if she doesn't go, she won't miss anything much. Thankfully, she's a sensible child and doesn't moan when I tell her it's just not worth the money.

The teacher should inform the students before they sign up, but I think many forget, or they assume that all students in such schools (probably an independent school) will not mind such fees. I would definitely mind! I think you should speak to the teacher in charge? At that kind of price, it shouldn't be compulsory. But it may be that the child will have to change CCA.

However, you should never feel obligated to pay. Having said that, when everyone pays, it looks bad on the kid that doesn’t pay.

I feel if the family do not want to pay, than the child may need to choose other \"cheaper\" or \"FOC\" CCA?

My ds is in Chinese Orchestra. Some of his friends quit because their parent unwilling to pay.

I can't remember need to pay how much. Should be less than $100.

The school informed us that they need to engage external source to train the students hence we need to pay.

Every sch should hv a Financial Assistance Scheme which the less privileged students can apply.

How the scheme works? What type of household is eligible to apply? I have no idea. Best to check with the school directly.

I remember the school will issue a letter to give a brief outline of a programme and the last paragraph will be to inform those who are from the less privileged background to contact the school to consult on the Financial Assistance Scheme.

What CCA is that? I think my daughter's was about $150 last year (can't remember, threw the notice away during the year-end clearing up). There is a compulsory overseas trip (day trip to JB) which costs $65, so I guess I can't complain. I've already told her that we will not sponsor the expensive overseas trips, and I doubt that any school will make those compulsory. Usually those trips are for very limited numbers. I suppose the school will say that the child should choose a cheaper CCA?

I use the \"contact us\" at MOE website to notify address change.

U will get an acknowledgment and subsequent another email to notify change of address is effective. I usu. attach a scan of my I/C as evidence.

In the email, I list down my children's name, B/C# and DOB, name of schools they r enrolled in.

Not Jennifer, but I've just been communicating with MOE about Edusave. For MOE, just call their customer service hotline. It's one of those where you navigate through a menu or you can talk to someone. No need to find a specific dept. to talk to. You should get a statement every year, so it seems they don't have your current address.

School Fee and Standard Miscellaneous Fee are deducted via GIRO from the bank account we informed the school on the pupil data form.

The Second-Tier Miscellaneous Fee is deducted from the Edusave account.

Every family would hv received a Statement of Account from MOE sometime in Feb every year. You will find the details of how much the amount is for each type of fee in the cover letter and the monthly deduction from the Edusave account.

If you have never received this statement, I believe you should check with MOE your registered address with MOE.

Having the correct registered address with MOE is important, esp when it comes to posting secondary school if none of the 6 choices are allotted.
