Hi! I have really bad eyes, and was thinking of buying a kindle. For people who have used Kindles, are they tiring to read on? And is there anything inconvenient about it/things that you would've wanted to know before buying one?

Until recently, Kindles were not actually supposed to be sold in Singapore. But now that there is Amazon.sg, they are. I have uses a different brand of ereader (Kobo) for several years now, and I highly recommend the e-ink screen. The main problem is that it is monochrome, so if colour is important in the books you read, this may not work for you. Different readers accept different ebook formats, so that is another thing to consider. If you plan to mainly buy or download Kindle format ebooks, then go for Kindle. But if you want to borrow ebooks from NLB, EPUB is a more common format, so you may want to choose another brand.

Ooh okay! Wow I didn't realise that different brands support different file formats! Definitely something I'll have to think about. Thanks so much for your help!

Also, I don't know if you have heard of this but I've once borrowed a book on openlibrary.org (I think it's similar to the NLB app concept where you borrow books virtually, and I think it's a legit and safe site based on my noob computer knowledge). It supports many different file formats too, so Zac's mum - you might want to see if this works with your kindle!

Hi dear, I could have brought my Kindle today for you to try out!

I love my Kindle, it’s the opposite of tiring on the eyes. In fact, i find it’s very soothing on the eyes, compared to reading an ebook on a phone or iPad screen.

It’s possible to vary the font size on a Kindle, but there’s no pinch zoom function. Just normal tap to navigate the menus or swipe left to flip the page. Useful features for studying/making notes are the highlighter, dictionary & translation functions.

U can browse the Amazon estore direct from the Kindle, and u can download a free sample preview (usually the first chapter). I often use that function to see if I really want to pay for the full book.[/quote]
Thank you for your reply (and sorry for taking some time to get round to reading it!)! That sounds really great actually, it has pretty much everything that I'm looking for! Computer/iPad screens really strain my eyes and I like to annotate as I read (but also hate writing on my books) so it sounds like the perfect in-between! I'll consider getting one for my own use! 😄

In any case, I agree with slmkhoo - PDFs appear as images in Kindle, so technically readable but practically impossible to read.
Some books are available in PDF form from NLB, but not many, and most also have an EPUB version.

Can't answer this question, but reading PDF on an ereader is not very easy. The words do not re-wrap as they do with other formats, so you have to move the image from side to side as you read - I find it impossible to read a book that way.

I don't see an option to download my NLB e-books in PDF, so maybe that's only for certain collections?

Hi slmkhoo, are you able to read NLB ebooks on your Kobo? I am looking for a e-reader that I can use for NLB ebooks.
Been doing that since 2011. Just look for one that can read EPUB format, and even better if it has Overdrive (a library borrowing software) loaded.

How do I borrow eBooks if I have Nook (from Barns and Noble) and Kindle 3?
The eBooks available for download: Koleksi Buku Elektronik Melayu (Malay eBooks) allows for downloads and reading off-line as long as the device has a PDF reader.

The only thing is that NLB e-books cannot be downloaded in a Kindle-compatible format, so there’s that.

I am seriously puzzled about Kindle books. Are they sold outside the US or not? My husband has purchased and downloaded Kindle books to his Kindle app using his Singapore credit card and Singapore-registered app. Yet, when I purchased a Kindle ebook as a gift for him, he was not able to download it because of country restrictions. We both purchased from Amazon.com and live in the same house!


Another question: Has anyone tried purchasing a Kindle book and gifting it to someone in another country? Did it work?

What about using gift cards? Will it work if I send a gift card to someone in Singapore or elsewhere, and they use it buy a Kindle book?
