But now that there is Amazon.sg, they are. I have uses a different brand of ereader (Kobo) for several years now, and I highly recommend the e-ink screen. The main problem is that it is monochrome, so if colour is important in the books you read, this may not work for you. But if you want to borrow ebooks from NLB, EPUB is a more common format, so you may want to choose another brand.

Ooh okay! Wow I didn't realise that different brands support different file formats! Definitely something I'll have to think about. Thanks so much for your help!

Also, I don't know if you have heard of this but I've once borrowed a book on openlibrary.org (I think it's similar to the NLB app concept where you borrow books virtually, and I think it's a legit and safe site based on my noob computer knowledge). I am seriously puzzled about Kindle books. Are they sold outside the US or not? My husband has purchased and downloaded Kindle books to his Kindle app using his Singapore credit card and Singapore-registered app. Yet, when I purchased a Kindle ebook as a gift for him, he was not able to download it because of country restrictions. We both purchased from Amazon.com and live in the same house!

Another question: Has anyone tried purchasing a Kindle book and gifting it to someone in another country? Did it work?

What about using gift cards? Will it work if I send a gift card to someone in Singapore or elsewhere, and they use it buy a Kindle book?

Thanks!
