Just want to understand how Chongfu \"streams\" P2 students as there is no exams in P1 & P2. How to tell which is/are the better class/classes when there is no grading?
I think it’s a question best directed at the school / school’s teachers as different schools use different methods.

I have just verified with his form teacher and apparently, she said is NOT based on results for the 3rd to 6th classes. They are all average. Since she did not mention the 1st and 2nd class, I assumed the 1st and 2nd class are the good ones as they might be taking higher mother tongue.

According to her, she said 3.3 is as good as 3.6. Class 3.3 to 3.6 are all average ability students. Not sure is it true. Sometimes they will not reveal to the parents.

According to my colleague who has went through this said in P4 they will be streamed again. So have to really work hard for P3 and P4 to go to a better class if now he’s in average class.

Isn't it demoralising for the kids as they are grouped based on their ability?
many primary schools currently still having Top class(es).
Some schools have only ONE Top class, some have 2 Top classes, others have 3 Top classes.
They call it streaming :
based on year end results (accumulated from Term 1 right up to Term 4) at end of P2 (into P3), or at end of P4 (into P5).

those pupils streamed to Top classes (or HA : \"High ability\" classes) :
will be \"stretched\", students learn more stuff, at a faster academic pace.


However, there are also some schools that follow MOE direction, move towards \"Mixed ability\" (MA) classes (no more Top class).

It all depend on the direction of your child's school set by the school Principal (P), after P consult MOE and also after P consult parents in your school (via Parents Support group feedback) : which approach parents feel more comfortable with.

Different school : standard of cohort, differ

You can ask your child Form Tr : to get into Top 2 classes, what is the mean or average score, per subject, based on entire cohort level ?
When they slot pupils goto different P3 classes, is based on entire end of P2 cohort level.

Or can phrase the qn in another way, when u ask Form Tr, during Parents-meet-Tr session :
What is the lowest a pupil need to score, for the Total of 3 subjects at end of P2, in order to get into the Top 2 classes, for P3 ?
Eg
Out of Total 300 marks : what is the lowest Total, before get cut off at 81th position ?

depend on individual primary schools
perhaps may ask your child's Form Tr : what is the criteria like for streaming at Year end, in child's school ?
you may pose this question to your Form Tr during end of Term 2, Parents Tr Conference
(before June school holidays begin)

for Primary 2 end of Year streaming, got 2 type :-

i) some schools are based on Overall Total of 2 subjects combined :
scored from Term 1 to Term 4 (English, Maths)

then, for mother Tongue :
if child do well : will be offered to do Higher Mother Tongue, in P3
if child do average in class : continue to do normal Mother Tongue as per normal, in P3

means when come to P3, attend Mother Tongue lessons :
pupils split : go to different Mother Tongue class, according to their subject competency level.

But there are also schools that do it only at P4.. Based on P3 results.
There is SA2 at the end of p2...so kids do go to different classes in p3.
Daughter was in p1...moved up to p2 together with her p1 classmates...at the end of p2, went to different classes in p3...class size also increased.
