how does Music Therapy help a hyperactive child ?

does it help a hyperactive child to sit still, be focus, concentrate in school work ?

My friend's teenage son has ADHD and gets distracted very easily. When I have a conversation with him, he can talk about 10 over topics in just a few mins. One day at my friend's house I watched him play the piano and it was quite amazing to see him concentrate hard on one song for 5 full minutes.. After I saw it for myself, I decided to enroll my autistic son for piano lessons too, hopefully this helps to train his focus

Personally, I would recommend music as a form of therapy only if the child responds positively to music. For instance, if your child does not speak full sentences (e.g. "I want a cookie"), but can sing a few lines of a song without any help (e.g. "the wheels on the bus go round and round"), then music could be a great tool to teach a lot of things. I often compose songs to teach actions and daily phrases, and this approach works even for non-verbal children. Eventually, they could even pick up an instrument or build other hobbies and leisure activities around music.

But if your child does not like music at all, or does not hum or repeat songs, then I am not sure if it will be effective. Imagine forcing a neurotypical 7 year old to learn the piano when he/she has completely no interest… They will still learn something (if forced), but it just wouldn’t be as effective or fun.

Does anyone's child ever go for occupational or music theraphy?

Mind to share your experiences and how to determine a child is needed such theraphy?

I think parents wld concern of letting their chid to go for occupational theraphy (OT) only if the child is unable to handle his daily activities in normal speed/way.

My youngest boy was refered to attend OT last mth by specialist in KKH. He is very slow in doing his activities in school and at home. He always be the last one who submit his worksheets in class. Then, same thing happen at home. Very slow to finish his meal and homework. :stupid:

He is a perfect minded child too. Always want to keep his things neatly in his own way. He will rub and rewrite his handwriting many times if he thinks that it is too small or too big or slightly fall on one side. He likes to write in big font too. He takes his donkey times to finish his colouring worksheet bcoz he wants to colour it neatly. Yeah... all these things are the main reasons contributing to his slowness in doing his sch or homeworks. I have tried many ways to help and remind him, but can't see much improvement.

He also has low attention span. Teacher commented he always day dreaming in sch. I think his attention span is abt 8-10 min only. Easily get distracted by classmates.

I am curious and wondering what ideas an accupational therapist can offer to prolong preschooler attention span when I attend the OT session with him. I am also trying to carry out the recommended home programmes to help my boy. So far he only attended 2 times. Hopefully I can see his great improvement b4 he goes to P1 next yr!
