In layman terms, to cover higher SUM, higher PROPORTION, restructured/private hospital and with the correct rider, 100% of the bills, under the terms and conditions for the situation for the claim.

2) Medishield life has pros and cons. cons is that you need additional payment from medisave (but you cant take this money out anyway). pros is that they cover pre-existing illness (with certain % extra premium for a certain number of years) and some other stuff. Currently no private insurers cover pre-existing illness.

3) One person can only have one intergrated shield with one private company. Signing with another company will cause the other to auto cancel. If you have developed illness during that time, DO NOT CANCEL, if not your illness will cause you to be rejected or excluded. Also, there is no such thing as double claim in H&S. (meaning claim from 2 companies for the same reason, same bills)

4) Medishield Life is compulsory by gov. =X I guess its a good thing. My dad had a stroke 3 years ago and he opt out of his shield back then, thinking it uses his "money". So he ended up getting nothing paid.

5) There are certain measures to reduce initial costs for initial years. you can check out the medishield life website.

6) Leveraging on the entire Singaporean population, the premium vs the pooling leverage is decent for the amount to be covered (especially pre-existing illness)

Also, riders enable you not to pay from the first $ of your bills. For medishield only cover B2 and C wards.

Also, for any parents who are also looking for free coverage for their children up to age 21 for hospitalization bills, can PM for more details.

If one pays and pays and doesn’t need to file claims, then that’s a good news. If he claims, that’s a ‘bad-good’ news for him.

In my opinion, all kids should be insured under the best IP plan since the plan is relatively cheap when they are under around 20. Once they start work, then it is up to them to decide whether they want to downgrade or to remain. If a kid is insured under regular medishield only and at age around 18 suffers an illness, he may have difficulty upgrading to an IP plan later in life if that disease warrants him ‘uninsurable’.

Most of the time we will just ‘pay and pay’ to the IP plan when we are young and may claim as we age (above 45 years old when cancer starts to strike). So for those who have been paying for IP, it may be worth continuing as you have ‘saved’ those premiums that are supposed to have a higher chance of claims when you age and so it will be a waste if you drop it (when you actually can afford).

Public hospitals have this notorious waiting weeks/months when come to specialist appointments. If you can afford to wait one/two/three months for an appointment after your GP told you you have a lump in your breast, then regular medishield can be the plan for you. (most of the time I know people say public hospital is good enough when all things are well, but when things go wrong, most of them can’t wait and head to highly recommended surgeon for diagnosis/surgery and have to burn a big whole in their pockets when they are under basic shields).

My late mum was under basic shield (Plan B NTUC) and my friend’s late mum was under the best IP. My mum stayed in SGH 4-bedded for about 4 weeks and my friend’s late mum stayed in a pte hospital single-bed for about 6 weeks before each passed on. If I wanted to accompany my mum in the hospital overnight, I had to sit on a chair till morning with whole body ache while my friend could lie comfortably on the sofa bed and next day still well enough for work. Meaning, sometimes the single-bed or multi-bed arrangement is not only for the patient’s comfort but also for the comfort of loved ones.
