Since I have some money to splurge, where can I go?
I don't want to buy the \"run off the mill\" shirts that retail at SGD 30. I am looking for some premium quality stuff and am willing to go upto SGD 200 for the right stuff.

hv u checked M&S \"Savile Row Inspired\" formal shirts? Or M&S' Italian line \"Collezione\"?

Zara, Massimo Dutti have some decent European cut shirts, while Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers offer American cut shirts.

Don't like off the peg shirts? you can visit CYC Custom Shop @ Raffles Hotel, Oxford Tailor @ China Sq, Just Men Tailor @ Tanglin Mall or many others inside Far East Plaza or Peninsula Plaza. My male colleagues got theirs done at Peninsula.

Can include embroidered initials on cuffs, diff fabric for inner collars/shirt button panels.

I am one of those weird people that never passed IPPT during NSF days. However, during reservist, I passed every year. Although once I had to retake the shuttle run. The encik at the IPPT centre was like :yikes: when I turned up to re-take that station only. Not my fault the stupid sergeant in camp with the stopwatch got slow fingers... 😉

bespoke means u "spoke in advance" to the tailor. It is over 100 yrs old and originated from Saville Row London, the gentlemen’s fine tailoring street.

Bespoke in England = haute couture in France. Cannot anyhow use bespoke in mktg ads cos bespoke association will ‘kbkb’.

why? Bespoke suits has no std pattern drawing. It is drawn as and when gentleman visits. It is fully hand stitched by tailor. That’s why paupers or street urchins in Victorian England couldn’t afford bespoke tailoring; only home tailored rags by own step mothers!

your bridal gown is "made to measure" nia. MTM alters a std pattern drawing or a std-size gown to fit each customer. It is sewn using machine though nowadays also mixed with hand work.

Bespoke is only used in ads after a 2008 ruling to allow fashion houses and labels to use it. It was a heavily guarded word by the Savile Row tailors. They are more lax now.


CYC probably can make bespoke shirts.

hmm...but a 100 years ago, I think almost every piece of garment would be 'bespoke'...doubt there was mass production then.

The contrast then was that 'bespoke' tailoring meant that you were rich enough to pay a professional to make clothes to your measure. For most other people, clothes were made at home by the women of the family or from hand-me-downs from richer people.
