But everything changed when he took a part-time job at McDonald’s during his holiday break.

Working long hours for hard-earned money, he gained a newfound appreciation for financial independence. He also realized that attending a better Junior College would provide him with more life choices.

This realization ignited a passion for studying. He poured himself into his academics, pushed his limits, and embraced every learning opportunity. His transformation was astonishing. Finally, the acceptance letter arrived from his dream Junior College.

But over the years I discovered that sometimes helping my child doing what he loves may be the way to help him to focus on his studies. It may sound unrelated but the thing is that passion and confidence in one aspect of our lives can spill over to others as well. Is there something that he loves that help to reignite his passion for life? Is there a EAE project that he is passionate about? A sense of satisfaction doing what he loves could change his state and indirectly getting him motivated in his studies.

However, I think rather than motivation that is changing depending on mood or external factors. Building habits is longer lasting. I highly recommend two books: Atomic Habits by James Clear and Grit by Angela Ducksworth. Atomic Habits is all about making simple little adjustment that is easy to accomplish and can have lasting, compounding effects. Grit is about passion and perseverance. It is said that it is only that you have passion in something you can then have the perseverance that leads to grit. And that is where one find the higher calling in life. Often we are lost because we don’t have the WHY to carry on. This is prevalent in youths because they are still searching for themselves. Start With Why by Simon Sinek is one great book about purpose. When I say higher calling, it need not be something out of this world like being the next Elon Musk but it could just be something that resonate with the child. He thinks that is something important to him and how he wants to live.
