My first choice would be connecting rooms if they are available, but if they are not, I think having a room directly opposite each other is more convenient than have rooms that are side by side to each other.

I will ask for the rooms to be side by side, but don’t usually ask for connecting rooms as not all hotels have them. Some hotels may offer them when they see we are family, but not often.
