Since it's basically a mugging subject

It seemed to be a recurrent theme if tuition is really beneficial for content-based subjects like Geography, Social Studies, History...etc The idea that these subjects are mugging subjects which relies on mere memorization is really outdated. The new syllabus for humanities actually focuses more on critical thinking skills and students' ability to express complex ideas in their essay.

For example, the new geography syllabus introduced the Geographical Investigation (GI) section which comprise of 13% out of 50m for elective geog and 25% out of 100m for pure geog. This section requires students to be able to analyze data and respond to questions that are not set strictly within the confines of the textbook. Hence, as such, you find more humanities tuition popping up to as forward-thinking parents already see the need to develop these critical thinking skills to give their children the edge over their peers who continue to rely on route leading.

ResilienceLC

Reply to Secondary School Geography on Thu, 18 Feb 2021 08:55:37 GMT

phtthp\" post_id=\"1979952\" time=\"1591552055\" user_id=\"35251:

based on 2020 \"core\" (pure) Geography subject, for the Essay section component part,
is it a lot harder to answer ?

Hi phtthp,

Many students find the essay component of core (pure) geog to be very challenging because to hit a higher banding (better scores) students are expected to show deep understanding of overarching geographical concept like \"Place\", \"Scale\", \"Dependence\" and synthesize information from different parts of the chapter to give a more complete answer.

Some tips would be:

1. Don't study each sub-component of the chapter as a stand-alone. Understand how each component relates to each other and be prepared to show this understanding in the concluding - evaluation paragraph.

2. Go beyond the simple PEEL structure taught by most schools. You'll at least need a solid conclusion linking the factors explained to a key geographical concept (space, place, dependence, scale...etc) in order to do decently well for the essay.

3. If the school teacher cannot explain these key essay skills well, seek help outside. There's increasingly more avenue to improve humanities outside of school - like humanities tuition.

Hope it helps

Alvin
Resilience Learning

ResilienceLC

Reply to Secondary School Geography on Thu, 07 Jan 2021 05:00:06 GMT

Hi, are the notes still available?
