If heading upwards you'll hv to grable with altitude issues.

LiJiang is beautiful. I love the old town & the culture of old stream coming fr the mountains. The locals use for their washing.

Try not to be tempted to buy their expensive teas, paintings, jades, clay teapots (紫砂茶壶), etc. If you hv to, bravely bargain & slash prices. Don't buy 紫砂茶壶 fr the streets coz there are this natural ones & there are imitation ones that contains mercury & other poisonous components. I went with some frds & all got excited with paintings of tiger, mountains, lotus ponds etc. Had helped them bargain fr a RMB900 piece to RMB300. Then next shop we saw the same Chinese paintings startingbprice at RMB600. :yikes:

Buying tea again is a learning process. It's great to enjoy great tea in Yunnan tea plantations, but rmbr it'll be diff taste when u parted yr wealth for it bcoz there is a diff in quality of mountain/springwater that gives it its rich taste & we can't get the same result fr our reservoir water. I've only bought a round packet of puer for its price appreciation (hopefully). Any tea leaves collector here wanna offload fr me?

Jade is interesting. Again bargain. Don't get fleeced. I've never got any in my generous China trips except when I was besotted by this pure purple bangle. Touch to see if it feels \"cold\", rub ard it to feel its \"coldness\". Hold it against the light to catch any crack lines. In genuine jades, you shld see gleaming rather than cloudiness. If the piece has consistent green, its most likely fake. If it has combination his of deep & various level of light green, higher genuinity, it is believed that as the wearer had it for long time wearing Jade piece, the color deepens & reflects yr good health. With cracks, the color cannot spread beyond the line & it is believed that health will not be balanced (ano words blocked). Just what u believe suppose.

Again, bargain right down & move yr price up (whether it's Jade, tea or paintings). If they ask what price will u offer 2nd or 3rd round, ask in turn what is their best offer & stay firm in yr lower amt. once you see their pain in moving their price, you know the price is ard that threshold.

If u get a chance to visit Kunming floral mkt, treat yourself. I bought 3 whole boxes of champagne roses for my home & gifted some to family, frds & colleagues.

Enjoy your China trip!

Estéema

Reply to Travel: China - Yunnan - Kunming - Lijiang - Shangri-la on Sat, 16 Sep 2017 06:59:00 GMT

Anyone going to Yunnan this coming Dec holiday? Dnls_mum has given me great assurance, i may do it with some other friends than my family cos the latter is more \"fussy\", :xedfingers: I think Yunan is a beautiful place.

Shopping wise, well, i bought \"over-priced\" souvenirs/silks..etc in beijing. I do not mind to \"spend\" in yunnan as I heard that they depends heavily on tourism and they are simpler than in cities ?? :scratchhead:

sosomum

Reply to Travel: China - Yunnan - Kunming - Lijiang - Shangri-la on Wed, 23 Nov 2016 03:04:54 GMT

sosomum: you can check with our Singapore TAs. Maybe they still have vacancies?

Yunnan has 25 ethnic groups (there’re 55 in total in China), so it’s quite an interesting place to visit. For this route, you’ll probably get to meet:
1. Bai tribe (Dali)
2. Mosuo (Lugu Lake)
3. Naxi (Lijiang)
4. Zang/Tibetan (Shangrila)
5. Dai (Zhongdian)
6. Yi (Kunming)

Diff ethnic costumes, dialects, cuisines, music, culture, architecture. You won’t be bored I guarantee you as you’ll be busy taking selfies with the minorities in traditional costumes and savoring Naxi hotpot and Guoqiao Beehoon!
