I must say that the student population there is very diverse. Like other schools, Fairfield has its own share of problems and up sides to it. I hope to share my honest opinion so as to shed some light!

Let’s start off with the good sides of Fairfield.
1. The teachers
The majority of the teachers you get, especially in upper sec, are very competent and committed. You need not worry about the course you choose, be it NT, NA, EXP, combined science or pure science, your teachers dedicate 100% of their attention to ensuring their students do well, especially in Sec 4/5, which is the crucial year. Some teachers go so far as to arrange consultations on weekends. They are a funny, jovial bunch who are fully capable of teaching their classes while disciplining them. I have never seen my friends’ teachers from other schools been this dedicated and close to their students.

2. Their CCAs
Though the selection of CCAs may not be as abundant as other schools, Fairfield excels at the CCAs that it has. Volleyball, squash, basketball - these three are the CCAs that typically bring home the top prizes in tournaments. However, CCAs with a modest achievement background such as Netball and badminton are definitely making a comeback as seen in recent years. In addition, the performing arts CCAs such as drama, choir and dance have a stellar record as well. Not to mention that programmes such as Sec 1 orientation are fully executed by upper secondary student leaders. Being part of it, I have experienced first hand how difficult this painstaking process of planning a large scale event is and how it has taught me resilience and persistence.

3. The culture
Now, although there are some black sheep like any other school would have, I would say the culture is a very fun loving and very closely knit. Minimal bullying. Bullying gets old by the time students hit sec 2. It’s really not much of a problem. The people you meet there really do come from different backgrounds, and it is not very difficult to make new friends - even for those 20-30% of students who come from schools other than FMSP. There is a sort of shared interest of student love for their teachers, especially in upper sec, which really helps keep the classes motivated and energetic during lessons.

Now, on to some bad points.
1. Largely lack of a strong Christian faith among students
This is no secret - people sleep during chapel, are too shy to sing worship songs, and even worship service events such as Chapelthon (no longer run by our school) have always been more of a social gathering for fun rather than truly worshipping God. No one really is that strong in their faith generally, but there are always exceptions. For parents who wish to bring up their child in strong faith, I believe this school may not truly be for you. However, if there are no other options, lecture your child to never follow their classmates who act rude during Chapel services. I know several friends who truly have a strong faith in God and some who are just starting their journey. So don’t fret too much, so long as your child has good self discipline and is aware of what’s right and wrong, they should be just fine.

2. The bad sheep of Fairfield.
Yes, this is undeniable. There is a minority of students, typically the NA and NT classes, who are rowdy and act as if they have no manners. However, I am aware that about 50% of these kind of people I know typically come from broken homes and awful backgrounds. Though that is no excuse, it is worth noting how diverse the student population is. I know some NT and NA students who are outstanding learners and student leaders who have done their school proud. There are also those in the EXP stream who try to do stupid things and are punished accordingly. Overall, there will always be the misbehaving group of students in EVERY school, and it is unfair to judge Fairfield’s reputation SOLELY on the misdeeds of some because about 90% of the school are those who have done no wrong.

Although there is much more to talk about in terms of whether it is a good school or not, I’ll end it off in terms of our academic studies.
The class of 2017 recently got their results, and about 70 people had attained an L1R5 of under 10 points. There were also a couple of 6 pointers. Let me tell you that there may be SOME who heck care their studies, but by Sec 4 they will buck up and realise the gravity of their situation. It is by no means a school that ‘just gets by’. I’ve seen my classmates, schoolmates and even juniors rigorously preparing for the national examination. The atmosphere leading up to O levels is a very tense and serious one. Students know they no longer have time to fool around anymore, so they start to study their asses off. Accomplishing a batch where 70+ students (about two classes) can get into ACJC, an esteemed institute, is no small feat. Due to the combined efforts of teachers and students, they CAN do well as long as students do their part.

In conclusion, it is up to your child and others who end up contributing to Fairfield’s culture and academic results. From these past few years of results, excellence in Fairfield is not an unattainable dream. Fret not for the reputation of Fairfield, for it is up to you and your child to achieve your own excellence, which can definitely be done.

It is challenging for the school to find a middle ground in terms of disciplinary approach.

To further complicate matters, parents and students these days are much more demanding and are expecting more from school.

Bear in mind, the classroom size is still very much 40 a class and gone are the days where teachers are empowered to firmly and strictly discipline students. Teachers are fearful of parents complaining, as a result, teachers are more tolerating towards rowdy behaviors.

Unless parents are willing to work with the different stakeholders instead of making demands of their own, it would seem a challenging climate for the school to explore ways to educate values and the correct attitude to the students.

If anyone is really keen to better understand the school, they should spend more time at the school to observe or survey the students instead of just reading of the mill.

A good school is not solely defined by how many that does well and get to stand at the podium to receive applause from the crowd. The overall experience by the large majority of the students is one big factor as well.
