If you’re willing to splurge upfront, Samsonite. It is well-built and lasts for years. Otherwise, any cheaper brand laptop bag.


I like laptop bags because they are designed to carry heavy loads without tearing. Also relatively ergonomic and comfy for the spine, shoulders. And mostly waterproof. Would have anti-theft features and multiple compartments for accessories also.

IMHO, a school bag shld hv safety & health considerations, besides the practical use :-

1. Lightweight
2. Durability
3. Padding for the back spine & shoulders
4. Front Buckle that helps with balance & support
5. Compartments for drinking bottle, books compartments & one separate one for laptop
6. Antithefts features are good to have

What is even more critical is the growing teen knows how to discern what is nec or unnec to pack into the school bag & consequences of overweight bags over the long term.

As a parent, I try to help circumvent by providing a 2nd set of those heavy textbooks at home (usu buy a 2nd hand latest edition owise brand new) so that my kids don't hv to carry thick textbooks home if the bag is alr overloaded. I'd rather take this extra effort then compromise on their small frames.

Once the spine is compromise ' worst if sclerosis then no returns & painful for the rest of their lives.

I've learnt that bags with the front buckle is very impt to help balance & spread the weight throughout the body.
Any brand that fits the above ? Can pm me if not convenient? Thanks

Where to buy this kind of bag? does the book to bring for sec 1 is heavier than primary? even at P6 i saw my daughter always bring so many books. and I need to bring her to doctor as well since her bone or spine..i dunno..not straight now. I think the idea for having 2 sets of books and put at home is good..

I have both of them and they’re really good schoolbags because I can keep all my books and necessities inside and it doesn’t seem or feel bulky. And it’s definitely far from having a childish appearance like those popkidz backpacks at popular.

My nephew had been begging his parents for a $100++ bag, just to look cool. I dont want the same thing to happen to my kids. A bland bag which is well-constructed works perfectly fine

The strap pads and compartments are pretty important when deciding, Designs matter but less than efficiency I feel.

Oh no... definitely don't recommend Kanken for school ley.. I don't think Kanken suitable for school use. Herschel is okay. how about Jansport?

Oh yes , two sets of textbooks really helps a lot . No more carrying heavy maths tb to and fro . The worst thing that would happen is the tb changing an edition and no one has the new edition to pass down to dc 😞 gotta buy two tb ..

True. But if you bother to check the new edition against the old one, sometimes you may find that only some pics are changed, if not identical. :rant:
Usually the teacher will not go through pages in detail during lessons or not referring to the textbook at all so it is ok to have the old edition in school. During revision at home, the kid will not miss out any information provided in the new edition textbook. Also, textbooks are usually for reference only & not much information can be gathered to do homework. Nowadays, pupils usually search the web or refer to guidebooks for more info.
Unless there is a major revamp on the syllabus (normally the cover page will change), dd will continue to use the 'expired' edition in school.
Sec school textbooks are indeed costly, especially for upper sec pure Science ($30+). Good thing they can be used for 2 years and can pass them on.

And yes, sec sch bags can be very very heavy as some textbooks are very thick and we can't complain to the principal now that our kids are teenagers. It's still worth it to invest in more textbooks than to see our poor kids suffering from backache or spinal problem.

It is almost weightless but it does not have any support to 'stand upright'.

One reason the bag could last so long may be because I always prepare 2 sets of textbooks for her - we purchase one set and request another set from neighbours/relatives/friends. So dd will have a set of textbooks in her school locker and another at home.
Some sec schs provide lockers (either free or at a fee) for their pupils and locate at the same floor as the classrooms. You may want to check this link http://www.rent-a-locker.com/default.aspx for the list of schools for this provider.

Hello. I would like to ask how are the bags from brands like option, icon and targus are.


Going to buy a new bag for secondary school, so want to ask for some opinion on these brands.

If you can, please recommend some brands to could use that can be bought in compass point.
If you don't intend to bring all your books to and fro from school everyday, jansport and converse are not bad brands to consider. There's a Converse shop at CP and I believe jansport can be bought from Royal Sporting House, or maybe even metro.

I prefer sports brands more because they are more sturdy (imo). I currently use a puma bag and I haven't had one by a sports brand that broke on me yet. If you have the time, perhaps consider going down to Changi City Point, I seem to be able to find good deals there, and there's many sports outlet stores.
