If there isn't anything you want him to spend on, then don't let him bring his money to school, or make him leave most of it at home. You may need to help him plan what to do with his money - a kid with all that money and no plans will just spend on whatever takes his fancy. If there is a toy or book that he wants, help him set his money aside for that and watch it build up, then bring him out to buy it. For young kids, having a concrete \"something\" at the end of the savings has more attraction than putting it in the bank when it just becomes another number. If the item he wants is too expensive and saving up will take too long, you can do a cost-sharing thing - when my daughter was in P1, there was a set of comic books she wanted, but it would have taken her 10 weeks to save up for one book (we gave very little pocket money!), so we made a deal with her that when she saved 50% of the cost of each book, we would put in the other 50%. This teaches them delayed gratification, but for that age, anything beyond 4-5 weeks is probably too long to delay.

I used to put my kids' emergency money in a little ziploc bag to be kept separately somewhere in the schoolbag. That way, there is less temptation to spend it accidentally or carelessly. I also included a list of emergency phone nos. and a few coins.

sharonkhoo

Reply to Recess Pocket Money on Wed, 11 Feb 2015 16:32:22 GMT

Snow24:
Hi

I gave my son P1 $1.50 on top of letting him bring bread and water bottle to school everyday. Emergency money of course cannot spend without proper reason. Need to educate the kids. Mine has a weekly allowance of $15. I let him decide how much to spend daily. Imposed rule of saving before spending. Savings tabulated at the end of every week. I pack food for him on some days. My boy is the stingy type so he will always eat the packed food first while queuing for more food cos he is always so hungry. He usually buys food which can 'fill him up'

TheAnswer

Reply to Recess Pocket Money on Wed, 11 Feb 2015 16:22:28 GMT

Mdm Koh:
Someone shared with me today, $2 a day for primary school, $5 for secondary and $70 a week for JC and poly.

$2 is barely enough for a P4 boy.

TheAnswer

Reply to Recess Pocket Money on Wed, 11 Feb 2015 15:20:44 GMT

Someone shared with me today, $2 a day for primary school, $5 for secondary and $70 a week for JC and poly.
