For words that have to be read together, the hypy spacing is close to each other. It helps in traininig the correct pronunciation.

Exactly. Even books from China publishing are not like that. So weird.

I guess they never followed the rules.

Since 1996,《汉语拼音正词法基本规则》has stated that:
大写规则 (s4.9.1): 句子开头的字母和诗歌每行开头的字母大写。

Anyway, a revised HYPY national standard was released in Jun 2012, effective Oct 2012. Capitalisation of the first HYPY letter in a sentence remains in the new \"Bible\" (s6.3.1).

To move with the times, esp after London Olympics, PRC MOE finetined and standardised the usage of uppercase HYPY on sportsmen's jerseys, building signages, city names, attraction names, etc.

All mainland school textbooks have since been updated.

SG MOE is merely keeping up with the gatekeeper of HYPY.

Dunno individual cost but one set (textbook, workbook, 习字本 and a reader) Is $8.60

Besides impacting Han Yu pin yin (first letter must now start with capital letter), besides Oral now become moving video clip, instead of still picture -
What other areas of Chinese, are impacted ?

Look at the pictures carefully. Only first letters were upper case, like how we write English.

One very obvious changed in new text book. HYPY have upper case!! My son's laoshi told the class NEVER write HYPY in big letter. No points given. :?
