It used to be insane in the past, when only HCI, VS, NYGH and CHIJ TP offered it.

Notwithstanding, it’s still tough and hard work compared to other subjects. The first two years are easy because the lessons take place during ‘normal’ lessons time. Students take additional art lessons in place D&T or F&N. The 3rd and 4th year is where the slog begins. Lessons are conducted outside of ‘normal’ hours which mean longer days and tiring afternoons. In addition, the student may still be expected to take up to 8 O Level subjects (if in O Level programme), ie 9 subjects total with Higher Art.

That said, it’s a subject that’s fairly easy to do well in - primarily because most students accepted into the programme are already talented in the subject matter in some ways. In the past, the difference between scoring a distinction in Higher Art vs (normal) Art was the Art History paper (3,000 years of human and art history isn’t that easy to compress into 4 years). Thankfully, MOE has reduced that component so that it’s much easier now.

Whether you like Art more or less is very much a subjective and individual matter. At least, at the end of the day, you will have a better understanding of the world around you - in appreciating architecture, in comprehending symbols and motifs, etc.

floppy

Reply to Art Elective Programme on Fri, 27 Dec 2019 01:45:50 GMT

Hi parents, I’m new here. MOE has also offered this program to non-AEP schools and students have to go NJC (a designated AEP Centre) for their weekly/ bi-weekly lessons. Accordingly AEP selection/ interview is usually conducted in the Jan/Feb in sec 1; in your case will be 2020.

There's no need for a nicely done up/ glossed portfolio. My DS just brought along his A2 art folder with selected pieces of artwork which he wanted to share during the interview session. For my DS's school, they will do a pre-selection of the interested/ potential students during the 1st or 2nd regular art lesson. They were given some drawing/ sketching tasks to do and those who cleared this pre-selection round were asked to go for round 2 with the AEP teachers. For this round, they were given some recycled materials and each (individual work) was supposed to make something out of these materials. They would also present their portfolio to the teachers. Some general questions were being asked, eg. why are you interested in this program, what do you hope to gain from it. I believe the teachers would find out about how passionate the students are, and would also tell them of the expected commitment level. As this is an additional subject on top of the regular art lesson, the students need to put in extra hours every week for lessons and projects/ assignments.

An acceptance of this 4-year program comes with a scholarship (read: commitment) of S$2400 p/a.

diannec

Reply to Art Elective Programme on Sun, 15 Jul 2018 03:56:43 GMT

I think it depend on school.
