Is it possible and doable to have a DIY trip to Europe? If yes, how much would that be for two travelers? My partner and I is planning to celebrate our anniversary in January next year in Iceland and other neighboring countries. I hope that you could help us decide regarding this matter.
Definitely possible to do DIY trip to Europe, especially the likes of UK, Iceland....

My SO, myself and our little one just came back from a F&E 1week UK (stop-by to visit friends and relatives, and for flight connection to Iceland) and a 2 weeks road trip to Iceland whereby we rented a car and basically drove round the whole island in Summer, where its almost 24hrs daylight. Beautiful country that is rustic, untouched and simply magnificent. Hoping for it to stay this way. Will not regret travelling there, especially if you like life away from the urban cities...

Anyway, not true that a fully packaged tour is cheaper. There are customized package tours to a specific location that can cost quite a bit.. All really depends on what you want to see and achieve, as normal package tours generally brings u to just some of the major tourist hot-spots outside the capital city of Reykjavik; while when u F&E, u get to explore the whole island like locals and even visit places where tour group will never bring u there.. Price of petrol is a killer thou, but I would still choose to do my F&E roadtrip over a short packaged tour..

As for rest of Europe, depending on where u wanna go, it can be relatively easy to DIY via internal flights or trains or even self drive...

Iceland is so vast and major attractions are all over though there's a ring road. Self-driving in January winter? 😓 Safe and pleasant to drive in summer-fall like my BIL did last yr.

Better join a tour group as my friend calculated it's cheaper to join one vs DIY. She paid $7000 / pax for a deluxe celebrity-led package tour (2 weeks). Non-deluxe should be $5-6k. With tour group, the guide will let u know when the northern lights show up. If no lights, continue to sleep in your ice hotel.

You can extend your trip after Iceland to DIY other Nordic countries.

Some tour agencies combine Greenland with Iceland.

We get flights costs via Expedia; depending on type of accommodation u prefer just go to various websites such as hotel.com, agoda, tripadvisor, etc and u’ll get an idea of possible budgets for yr preferred accommodations. These are yr main costs, then u budget for yr meals & gifts. Our family has been easy with exploring different types of food & had at times cook our own meals and at times treat ourselves when we encounter local delicacies & famous restaurants. In Europe it’s not difficult to travel via trains & local hop-on/hop-off tour buses or u can engage land tours for special activities (chasing northern lights) or specific sightseeing spots.


Get some ideas fr feedback fr the various sites & KSP travelers.

My family planning for next year’s Europe trip. Cost will be very different fr last year’s Europe trip as we’ll be going to the Swiss Alps and might want to do a European cruise.

Yes, subject to various considerations: How many places? How tight a schedule? How tight a budget? How experienced are the travellers? The more restrictions you have, the more difficult it might be to fit everything in. Cost is too variable for anyone to tell you.

For e.g., my family did a DIY 2.5-week trip in Europe (Paris-Lucerne-Venice- Florence-Rome) in 2012. I booked flights, train tickets, accommodation and some entry tickets online. We didn't pack the schedule too tight, and we managed fine.

It's definitely possible to have a DIY trip to Europe. I reckon that's how most people travel / visit Europe these days.

How much would that be? Cost is a function of:
1. Duration (more days = higher budget)
2. Style of travel (5 stars hotel / fine dining > AirBnB + basic meals)
3. Location (London or Paris > just about everywhere)

Just tell the travel agent what you want and let them prepare a private itinerary for you. This way, you get to decide how long you want to spend at each place and not have to do shopping stops that package tour likes to take you. I am actually in contact with a local travel agent in Iceland now to arrange a private tour of Iceland next March.

That is very true. It is up to individual preferences.
When my children were young, I found that going on package tours were stressful, because it was difficult to get my children ready in time. But I think package tours are good if it is adult travelling alone or with friend/friends, especially to a new place for the first time.:)

I won’t discount package tour totally but I know it’s not suitable for me (or my family). For some, it’s a good deal to let other people take care of the details, and in the hands of a good agent / agency, it is very worthwhile.

Yes, I will prefer to have a relax trip, explore the area slowly. I actually quite like to do the researching of info, although time consuming but that making me to have more knowledge on that country/places. I especially like to look for homestay, I love looking at the foreign houses, the interior of the houses, think I got potential to be peeping tom hahaha…

I am waiting for my young one to grow up, then is time for me to go Europe again heeheehee…

For me, I like to see more of each place. I remember spending 2 full months just to travel through Northern Territory.
And I usually will take 2 weeks to one city (or two) in Europe. 🙂

I have kept telling my bro and sil to do it F&E but they still prefer follow tour. They do not want to spend times on researching and as this is the 1st time for them to go Europe, so that want to cover as many places as possible.

planning a packaged tour to Europe specifically France/Italy/Switzerland in Jan 15 and got some itineraries from tour agencies..

i've trailed through the history of this forum and some threads on this are quite dated n most seem to prefer self-arranged tours. I don't really wanna waste time on planning my own tour. Any advice on the agencies pls and who has tried which agency to Europe and it was good? thks.. .

I was one who did a self-arranged tour in 2012. We started out intending to book a package tour, but didn't like any of the itineraries (often too much shopping included and not the type of sightseeing we like) and didn't like the prices (nice hotels and fancy meals don't really matter to us). It did take a lot of (my) effort and time, but I reckoned that we saved some of the 'wasted' time on the tour. Do look closely at the tour itineraries before booking!


this is exactly what happened for my family of 2 adults +3 children as the travel agents tend to beautifu the itinery but actually not much done and lotsa waiting time and shopping time which is quite pointless imho

However, I do have friends who get packaged tours from Chan Brothers regularly. I also heard of this gentleman who can help customize your Europe trip according to your preference.
