Time flies - now it's already October! DD1 EOY Exam has started and today is her History paper. Next Monday Science, Tuesday Maths paper 1 and Wednesday Maths paper 2. Thursday and Friday are marking days so I presume no schooling for her?

Secondary school life is really v different from the primary school - yes, all the project works, CCA, etc....never ending.

I agree, life has changed for our DCs in Sec1. They have really grown up ( forced to grow up?). For the moment though, despite all the project works, graded assignments and all...DS remains as close to me as ever and we still have time together. So grateful for that.

I didn't study that hard in primary school. it wasn't this kind of crazy then.

secondary school has like 8 subjects to study for in a week compared to primary school. with supplementary lessons, project work and CCA, time passes even faster right?

It is comforting to know that she has came up with her own revision schedule prior to exam. I probably will monitor her closely next yr as it is streaming year.

how was the sec 1 journey?

DS exam to start next week. He did well in 2 subjects this year and was exempted for those.

His Sec 1 journey is so fast. He has grown up so much (can take mrt here and there w/o me), much more confident (can email teachers himself), so discipline and mature (makes notes himself for revision) and became a better athlete (taking part in more competitions).

I feel that I'm left behind - what happened to my \"baby boy\"?

This is fast. DD's last paper will be next week - 8 Oct. She has been so occupied with the exams.
After EOY exam, CCA will be resumed and some weekends will also be burnt.

I miss my 1-1 bonding with her too.... :hugs:

sec 1 & 2 have several projects to be done and group meetings can be hard to arrange.

Busy year for dd but relaxing for me πŸ˜‚ , letting her manage on her own, no longer have to breathe down her neck like last year when she was sitting for PSLE.

There were little hiccups like when she forgot to bring her graded geography assignment and had to ask her teacher for extension of time by 2 hours I think. The extension was granted and she managed to get it done after school and submitted on the same day. The teacher wrote the words \"late\" on the paper but I don't think she was penalised for it. πŸ˜„

As for group work, I have told her not to wait till the last minute to get things done but I don't think she is following my advice. :razz:

I have to remind her that she should ask her team to share the load equally, otherwise not fair for them to share the same credits when everyone is putting in different efforts. She said is okay, though I feel that she is afraid to be perceived as the "petty one".

Hi zbear, my ds is in Sec 1 IP. This is the first year doing PW. Supposed to create a boardgame. I thought it should be fun until I realised no one doing anything. They meet up for 4-hours and nothing done to the board!!!!!!

No sure about co-Ed, but this is my view

- boys tend to be more easy-going & upfront. If a project mate dun contribute much, the rest will tell him off & will do more to cover. If meet one who totally Bo-chup, they have no qualms to report to teacher.
- girls on the other hand will whine amongst themselves & to others. Seems paisay to report to teacher & unwillingly to 'jeopardize' their friend. So eventually see if the non-contributor will be paisay & buck up......usually will anyhow do some. Then the rest will chip in.....usually there will be 1-2 who places more emphasis & do more.

Conclusion - it all depends on how Bo-chup is that person & how concerned are the remaining project mates. The 'most kiasi' one who dun want to lose marks or get pulled down will usually be the one who will fill in the gap

Sama sama for my dd in an all girls' school. Dd very gan cheong over missing dateline. But after the first few projects, now a bit more relaxed. It helped that she found like-minded kakis to form her own group. Stress starts if the T assigns the group randomly. It helps that some projects require the girls to submit self and/or peer assessment. The bo chup ones usually get lower peer assessment grading.

Ah so clearly everyone's experience is different. DS has never complained about anyone even though there are group members with zero contribution...not just once but a number of times. He does try and encourage them to contribute but to no avail...

Too late by the time result returned for parents' signature.
The kids probably didn't realise they did a sloppy job.
