Still plenty room to recover. Also many funny teacher give spot tests which explained why so many failed. There are also Teachers setting high level tests to Convey their expectations. Look for systematic, not symptomatic issues of your girls. Your girls quick apology is a good sign. Many don’t even bother!

Without knowing the makeup of the class, the teacher's expectations, how hard she studied etc. it's hard to know if the test was unusually hard. But you can point out that if only 11 (out of 40?) passed, she could still be in the upper half of the class! It's normal to be a bit upset at first, but encourage her to look towards the next test rather than dwell on what's past.

If she's have time management issues, perhaps you can help her instead of letting her figure it all out herself. Sit down with her when she plans her timetable and maybe give some suggestions, and also give some reminders if she's obviously not keeping to her plans. This is only sec 1, you might be overly apprehensive to the extent of a perfectionist in terms of understanding the topics taught. Very few Sec 1 students would understand the subjects, especially physics, in the first instance of learning. In learning physics, do not be bothered if you have not grasped the concepts completely. You just need to repeatedly flip back to earlier pages and re-learn when you cannot understand new lessons. New lessons will help to concretise the concepts of previous lessons. The vague ideas will slowly gels if you put in consistent efforts. Please also note that many talents also learn like this.

In the class, do ask questions when confused. Don't feel embarrassed, just ask your teacher to explain one more time.

Another suggestion is to form a study group, but you need to make sure there must be one or two better students in the group and who are willing to share.

If all failed, truly, you need a good tutor to guide you through the thick mess before the coast is clear for you to follow your lessons. Your school schedule is so tight, you have no time to explore yourself, and the teachers are also not free to offer a holistic assistance. If you feel that the situation cannot be arrested, a strong and speedy intervention is the only way. Tuition is not stress. It is a means of proactive learning. A good tutor will certainly helps you.

Continue to fight on! But also two things you must do: regular exercise and sufficient sleep. These two are non-negotiables!

.

PhysicsTeacher

Reply to All About Preparing For Secondary 1 on Wed, 27 Jan 2016 14:41:12 GMT

Btw, where are there 2 threads on All about preparing for sec 1? I am the only child and my parents never received 'modern' education so I was really lost but everyone here helped, 100% grateful for everyone here Thanks for all the tips and opinions, they have helped me to plan out what I would do with my time.

I decided to continue with 3rd language as I feel that I am lucky to be able to learn another language and culture. I am just really glad I did not choose Japanese and the workload is really a lot However, if I really need those hours and am desperate for time, I might drop out, that is something I would not like to do or plan to.

After reading all the comments and suggestions, I believe that I will view extra afterschool activities in another way. You are right, I am given the privilege to learn life skills and other skills that could help me in the future so instead of complaining and whining about it, I should look at it from another perspective and try my best to achieve all round development, after all, academics is not everything. Perhaps what the school organised would help me to discover a talent or an interest I have never thought of, being positive about it would enhance my learning experience for the next four year instead of being a pessimist about everything and gaining nothing from the precious years of secondary school.

As for catching up with the class and tuition, I will put in more effort and like my username, 努力努力再努力，I will not give up so easily and continue to work hard, always reminding myself that others have gone through this too. As an IP student, I must be an independent learner and not depend so much on tuition and all so I talked it out with my teacher and she suggested that if I really felt like I needed it, I could go for tuition or hire a private tutor for my weakest subjects, just like what other parents have advised me on this forum.

With all these information and opinions, I will definitely improve on my perspective of certain things and try my best to adapt ASAP. And once again, :thankyou: :lovesite:

.027671.027671.027671.027671.027671.027671.027671

Reply to All About Preparing For Secondary 1 on Mon, 25 Jan 2016 12:53:20 GMT

kennethTutor:

努力努力再努力:

I do not understand what the teacher is saying during lesson time, it happens a lot. I do not believe that it is because my basics taught in primary school is not strong enough as I always manage to adapt to new topics quickly and come up with the best methods within a short period of time. This is the first time I feel so lonely and lost in my studies. The fact that all my friends seem to understand makes me feel really bad. The people in my class are competitive and do not help me even if they know, I end up running back to my primary school group chat to seek help.

There are other avenues for help! For example, you can post your questions here in the proper threads or you can try an app called EduSnap. The app is pretty popular among students.

Unfortunately in life there are going to be people who are extremely competitive and self-centered. Focus on what you can control! And don't be like them!

努力努力再努力:

I tried to read up before lessons but there are many factors that interfere. 1, our subjects are random, we started with book 1, chapter 3 for Maths, then now we are at book 1, chapter 15 and book 2, chapter 12&13. I tried to read up, even bought guide books as notes provided are not always clear, however, the randomness always makes me feel like all that reading is useless. The teachers try to help me, especially my Maths and Physics teachers. They try to help me as much as they can but due to the fact that all my lessons progress really quickly and my teachers are not always free during recess, they are unable to clarify all my doubts.

If you don't mind you can post a general outline of the topics covered so far, especially for Maths and Physics. I am pretty sure there are people here who can help you link the topics together and see 'the big picture'.

For example, in primary school, you probably learnt Fraction first, followed by Ratio, Decimals and finally Percentage. With practice you would have realized they are all closely related to one another. Linking new concepts to old ones will reinforce your learning!

Pre-reading doesn't work for everyone. When I was a student I found it a complete waste of time to pre-read the whole chapter. Moreover if you don't have a decent understanding of the previous chapters you may run the risk of complicating things further when you read in advance.

My tip for you is to look out for the main ideas in the chapter especially the Summary page and learning objectives in your textbook/guidebook. Some students take about one term to adapt, as Sec school life is definitely very different from Pri school, you have more subjects and hence, more homework and projects too. For example, you can post your questions here in the proper threads or you can try an app called EduSnap. The app is pretty popular among students.

Unfortunately in life there are going to be people who are extremely competitive and self-centered. Focus on what you can control!
