Whether the kids are in the morning or afternoon sessions.

I am one who leaves work ON THE DOT, so I can fetch my boy(s) and prepare dinner for the family. Right now, as DS1 is in the afternoon session, he reaches home between 6.45-7pm. Dinner after shower, and everything got to complete by 8pm. If there is time allowance before 8pm, he can have a short break for playtime or TV time. Our revision/homework/spelling time start at 8pm, try to end everything by 9-9.30pm. Got to be real fast & rush since i still have laundry (the boys' uniform) to do and my own shower time before our storytime and bedtime :!: Bedtime try to before 10.30pm. BUT there are ocassions when i will \"snake\" around, cut short the revision time.... And on wednesday, schedule will be different due to DS1 taekwando lesson. So far, i have not enrolled DS1 to any enrichment or tution class since i am \"forcing\" myself to do it by myself In the morning, DS1 will start his day at 7.30-8am, i will send him to BASC. It dun really matter me if that is a good BASC, because all i need is my son is taken care/fed before he goes to school in the afternoon. And this BASC is affordable and near to his school.

Likewise if he is in the morning session, he will still have the same time with me. But i believe i will have to bring forward the bedtime.

Titank, juggle with it and we got to make it!! :celebrate:

Luvkid

Reply to Homework Supervison (Limited Time) on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 07:23:52 GMT

It looks like be it SAHM or FTWM, we all seems to have lack of time :?

KS_me

Reply to Homework Supervison (Limited Time) on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 04:48:45 GMT

Even though I'm a SAHM, my ds in p1 am session and he doesn't take pm naps. So gone are the days where we would go shopping/ elsewhere after work as the priority is to get home by 8pm.

We would then start homework, learning spelling/ tingxie, enrichment classes homework, etc... between 8pm - 10pm. Subsequent to that, I will ask them to read a book before going to bed. So the kids will probably sleep by 10.30 - 11pm.

This year with my P3 in AM session, I am targetting 7.30 -9.30 revision time so she can go to bed by 10pm. But I observed that she is a Channel 8 9pm show addict so it actually does not make a diff whether we end at 9.30 or 10pm.

Frankly, I don't know if we've the \"right model\" to ensure the kids' success. It's also not as though that my kids are top performers. But I strongly believe that children strive on consistency. If we make it a habit to study every weekday evening, they will become used to it. This is true as sometimes if I don't get home by 8pm, they would call me and ask what are the things to do tonight. It shows that they are used to it. We usually lax during school hols and they will then need to adjust again when school re-opens.

MMM

Reply to Homework Supervison (Limited Time) on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 03:37:55 GMT

KS_me:
We have only about an hour for homework, some bonding and his playtime.

No longer lucky Now very hectic because of morning session. I recalled that when my no. 1 went to P1, it was a big adjustment for us. It didn't helped that my no. 2 and 3 stays with my mum during the weekdays while no. 1 stays with us.

Every night, we would be rushing around between my mum and our place so as to ensure that we can see all of them. It led to suboptimisation.

It helped alittle when my no. 2 goes to P1 last year and both of them are in the same house. But I ended up seeing no. 3 only on weekends as I had to guide the 2 older ones in the evening. We are trying to find a reasonable preschool around our place for no. 3 so that we can have economies of scale when it comes to studying at night. Unfortunately, I can't find something ideal so far...

Then this year with no. 1 in P3 (AM session) and no. 2 in P2 (PM session), this created new challenges. We have to be home early as now bedtime must be by 10pm (latest) so that my P3 can wake up early. So we need to be home by 7.30pm and drive them to bath, do their homework and revision. We are still trying to settle down.

MMM

Reply to Homework Supervison (Limited Time) on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 03:13:25 GMT

very lucky for you & your DS that you have convienent logistic support that allow him to sleep late.

My DS is in PM session too. He reached home (taking school bus) at about 6:45pm. 7pm started to have his dinner and because he is a fast eater, he usually finised meal at about 7:20pm. 8-9pm were used to go thru' his homework, packing school bags, sharpening pencils & stuffs. 30mins break to watch tv, 9:30pm my hb will go thru' with him once more on the topic taught today at the school (usually about 30mins).

He would then sleeps at 11pm or by 11:30pm. It may not sound right to to others but this is the best solution for hb and me who are full time working adult and yet want to nurture him our way. Showers then dinner. By the time she is done with dinner, it will be about 8pm. I’ll go through with her, her homework if there’s any, spelling, etc. Usually all these can be done by 9pm. Thereafter she is free to do what she wants and bedtime is 10pm.

I have started assigning her some assessments to do in the morning to keep her occupied. If she does not have any homework, I will spend the time going through the stuff that she missed out or does not understand.

So far weekends are manageable too. Chinese enrichment on Sat morning and swimming on Sunday morning. Rest of the day free and easy.

I think the schedule is still pretty lax now since it is still the start of the school year and very limited homework. We’ll see how the year progresses.
