They can learn and generate interest in programming, develop good logical thinking, get expose to visual programming, and it is also part of STEM, which the govt is actively pushing into this area.

Some great tools and software platform are Scratch (developed by MIT), that teaches STEM, logical thinking and visual programming from as young as 5yrs, and there is also Scratch Jr, a scale down version for the iPad, and Android tablets.

There is also Hopscotch, for the iPad, which is similar to Scratch. All these tools uses visual/block programming, and helps the kids generate lots of fun and interaction and develop develop good logical thinking in the process.

There are many more similar or great tools for learning, having fun and stimulating as well.

All of which are free.

As a programmer (C#.NET, ASP.NET, XNA Game (XBOX)) myself, I can tell you that there are no IDEs (integrated development environment) out there that is designed for kids.


For those who might not know what an IDE is, it is basically a software that is used to make other software.

Its really difficult to even come up with one. Even NetBeans (which has the best customisable interface in my opinion) is too complex for a 12 year old. A scaled down, kid version would eventually be scripting and it better be a really good one that mimics the actual programming scenario.

Good basics in programming logic, and easy graphical UI. Lots of people sharing their works online, so a rich resource of using others codes to learn from as well.

Google for more, there's Alice, basic etc.

Python's a good start as well, with lots of books on it for kids and adults.

It looks interesting, until you take a closer look at the game screens which says the games are made with \"GameMaker Lite\" or something. There is a difference between programming with a real programming language vs scripting. Might be better to invest your kids' time with learning Java and developing Android applications with that language.
