The KNKT said it examined the aircraft's maintenance record as well as the recovered flight data recorder (FDR) during its investigations.
It said weather conditions did not affect the aircraft, according to data from the flight recorder.
However, an examination of the aircraft maintenance record uncovered 23 occurrences of the RTL \"system problem in the last 12 months\".
\"The problem was initiated from the crack soldering on the electronic card of the Rudder Limiter Unit,\" said the KNKT.

Janet I think you have misunderstood what they are saying. Although it is not explicitly stated the implication is that an updraft drove the plane into a steep climb. A pilot's input could not have caused it to climb so fast.

Well no, just saying that according to initial reports (at least those I saw in the press) from the Indon authorities, the radar returns showed a climb rate that is at the limits of or exceeded the aircraft's ability to climb. Some things are beyond a pilot's control, like the Hudson river incident. Skilled airmanship saved the day then.

Like it or not, a skilled pilot can make the difference in a tight flying situation. But then again in many types of failures there's nothing a pilot can do.

AF 447 crashed into the sea at many hundreds of feet/sec and smashed om impact. At those speeds the impact is like hitting a concrete wall in a speeding car. The passngers were probably dead or mortally wounded instantly. The biggest misconception is that a water landing is soft. It is NOT. The same probably applies to Air Asia. That kind of crash hardly anyone survives the initial impact let alone put on a vest and escape the plane. For AF 447 most of the passengers were found strapped to their seats many years later.

controlled \"Landing\" on water is not disastrous. passenger probably can survive.

The effect of crashing into water is no much difference from crashing onto land.
