I corrected the said teacher during the briefing and showed her that the PSLE booklet clearly saying that what choice you put do not affect your chances. So, the problem is that despite MOE making so much effort to explain the algorithm of selection (for PSLE to sec school, that is), and saying that what choice you put does not affect your chances, school staff (teachers included), parents ... etc still continue to spread this incorrect myth which spread over to JC's allocation ...
[quote]
If I am to write the algorithm I wouldn't be here! Out of the 30 students, 10 scored nett 6 (10 - 4), the next 10 scored nett 6 (8 - 2) and the last 10 scored nett 6 (6 - 0; I know it's almost impossible but let's assume they have zero bonus points). How do you think they will allocate the slots for the 15 places?

Let me know what you think!

Thanks for your question.

I really like to ask questions to trained computer programmer.

From your example, you are not detailed enough from a computer programmer point of view. You are assuming there are only 30 vying for 15 but you must asked how to they reach this stage ? How did the algorithm works to get here ? You cannot write an algorithm based on your info.

The algorithm is someone similar to those in PSLE as to how they allocate students to secondary school. There difference now is that there is no range for the grades to rank the students. So, how to the computer starts selecting ? Obviously the top student (ie ranking number 1) will select his choice first. Those rank number 1 will get his 1st choice obviously.

So, the question to be asked is, how do you rank all the 29,000 students ?

For simplicity, we just assumed that there are only bonus points of 2 and 4 (meaning only -2 and -4)

Then the algorithm goes like this.

First those with the lowest nett score gets to select the school. So, 2 is the lowest bcos there are 6 subjects in L1R5 (ie 6-4=2)

So all those Singaporean with 6-4=2 gets to select which school they wanna go. If there are say 8 Singapreans with 6-4=2, the these 8 students are randomly selected by computer to see who gets to select first.

The next batch are PRs with 6-4=2

Then international students with 6-4=2

Then, it goes to the next number up, ie batch with score 3 and so on ...

When it reach batch with score 4, it is like this

The next batch are Singaporeans with 6-2=4

Then Singaporeans with 8-4=4

Then PRs with 6-2=4

Then RRs with 8-4=4

Then international students with 6-2=4

Then international students with 8-4=4

Then, it goes to the next number up, ie batch with 5 and so on ...

Hope that helps

VitoRelax

Reply to 2015 O Levels (Sec 4) on Wed, 13 Jan 2016 23:39:35 GMT

Please also visit this link for discussions on 2015 O level results:

http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum ... 8&start=10

MyMelborne

Reply to 2015 O Levels (Sec 4) on Wed, 13 Jan 2016 17:30:08 GMT

zbear:
I am curious and also off-topic but this selection by MOE is only for S1 Posting n JAE admission?

What about Uni applications?

MOE has control of the administration of the Government and Government-aided primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges, and a centralised institute.
