It depends on your dd, what is her forte. B is content heavy. C have to relearn. M is Ok. E is a new subject and depends on the child's aptitude. DD was hesitant about taking up E but found that she enjoys the subject a lot. Can try taking H2 first. If can't cope, can drop to H1 in jc2.


Hi zeemimi, why do they have to relearn C?

JC Chemistry is quite different from O level Chemistry.

Sorry, I've edited the title as I wld like to find out more about the other humanities subjects for Science stream students.


There is one subject called English & Linguistic studies. Is this avail in most JCs? May I know what is the content about & any comments on this subject pls? Are there many takers or few like K&I?
Most JCs would offer Geog, History, Lit and Econs as contrasting subjects. There is also the option of KI in some JCs. I don't think all JCs offer ELL. DadofGirl's dd is doing ELL. He might have more info for you.

OT, I agree - ss is the most difficult to score.

I wonder what is the national rate for A grade for Elect subject? I heard that Elect Geog is the easiest n Elect Lit is the most difficult.

skyed, d classmate whom you mentioned dropped to h1 econs, do u know what her issues are with d subject?

I had d same problem with accounts in my schooling days. I'm more of maths person n I thot I wld hv no prob with accounts but I was so wrong. Absolutely hated it!

What are d other humanities subject that are good to take, may I know?
she just couldn't do it. even after dropping to H1, her econs grade was around E/S in internal exams. my class was kinda a mixed combi class, had students taking art, history and econs.

art - extremely time consuming. there's a coursework portion for A levels that was due around our prelim period, all my art classmates skipped a prelim paper to do last minute finishing touches on their coursework for submission. even for those who are artistically inclined, there is A LOT of memory work involved, as you have to study a ton of artists for the theory paper. if I remember correctly, it's over 100 different artists.

history - my H2 friends complain that it's almost as much as studying 2 whole subjects because of the insane content. a ton of memorising involved and then you have to mould the content for essays, because the questions aren't straightforward. for H2 you study both international and southeast asian history. H1 you only study SEA.

as for econs, which I took, there is very little math involved. a lot more of understanding the concept and then just applying. personally I didn't memorise much, just key points to use for essays eg. pros and cons of protectionism, globalisation etc. then during the exam just bs my way through the essay hahaha. oh and have to memorise definitions. but really, all things considered, very little memorising involved compared to other humanities subjects.

hope this helps. idk about subjects like lit/geog/tsd/cse/csc but i have heard from some geog friends that if you plan to take bio, don't take geog. it's suicidal to memorise the amount of content for both subjects.

English Lit is pretty easy since there isnt alot of memory work required. But Lit lacks formal and strictly 'correct' answers. This is unlike econs and geog where you can memorise and regurgitate.

For subjects like math and chem, the difference between H2 and H1 is enormous, but for econs it’s much less so. Also, for H1 there is a greater weightage for CSQ than H2. And since essays are usually the ‘easier’ component for most people…


edit: also, I took BCME in JC. among my classmates, those who did drop a subject to H1 mostly dropped chem. only had 1 student in my class drop econs to H1, but that was bc she really can’t do econs (consistently U throughout J1).

H1 Econs content is NOT half of H2, unlike other subjects like Geog…
It is about 70%-75% H2 content, in fact one of the most "boh wah" subj to take it at H1…
My gal’s teacher dont really enocurage her pupils to take Econs at H1…
Unless, at the end of Yr 5/JC1, the grade CMI…then "force" to take it as H1…

Besides a good grasp of the English language …must also like graphs…

It’s also very different from B, C and M. Ask your dd to try taking it at H2 level first. She can always drop it to H1 if she can’t cope.
