NUS allows 10 choices, meaning anyone could have put Biz as last two choices and still be considered an 'applicant'. Hence inflating the stats.

2. Application fees only cost $10. Which gives applicants 10 choices. Many applicants with bad grades and not much choices will just whack and pray for the best. I know I did.

3. Singaporeans will usually always apply for all 3 big universities at the same time. Meaning even SMU, with a smaller intake, will receive approximately the same number of applicants from NUS/NTU. This triples the number of applicants for each school because one person is technically applying thrice.

Definitely there are more applicants than there are vacancies. But the IGP is all you need to know. Any other stats and figures would just be pretty misleading. In any case, the IGP states the vacancies clearly, 546 for NUS biz ad.

havok_ex

Reply to 2014 A Level Results on Fri, 10 Apr 2015 14:35:33 GMT

Augmum:

takchek:
I doubt the figures for each degree program is released by the university. Oxford, for example, gives offers of AAA. An offer may or may not specify subjects, depending on subject combination as well as the subject one is applying for. For instance, a kid with PCME (all H2) applying for Law would probably be asked for AAA, with no further specifications. However, someone with the same combination applying for Chemistry might be asked for AAA in PCM (the more relevant subjects).

Some UK unis give 4 H2 offers (eg Cambridge), but I think they're relatively uncommon. Spent time practising and memorising is more productive.
This is something that many students addicted to tuition cannot understand. The process of figuring out an answer is more important than the answer itself. Some students conveniently \"subcontract\" their thinking to tuitors, and some tuitors happily take over the task. However, in exam, students have to figure out their own solutions, particularly if the questions do not repeat. Same thing at work place, there is no model answers to follow, so the skill to be independent thinker is important, which is mostly mislead by tuition, except some very very good tuitors who prompt students to think, but they are rare, and good students do not need them.

Louis

Reply to 2014 A Level Results on Tue, 10 Mar 2015 13:36:27 GMT

zbear:

DVL:
My DD is like your DS, no other tuition other than Higher Chinese till O Lvl. Generally, students will fare slightly better at the national exams than at school exams, but because the competition for entry to JC/uni has gotten tougher, many students who do not score at least a C grade at school may consider tuition to boost their grades. Scoring better at school will make them more confident as the national exams approach. In a sense, you can say that they don’t want to take the risk. The risk of not doing well is definitely there. The only way to eliminate the tuition culture is if students can manage to improve their grades at school. Then parents won’t feel the need to engage tutors.
