Personally I feel that it depends on what you need to do with the laptop.

For JC's PW, an i5 Laptop with 8GB RAM and an SSD would be more than sufficient, and there are many lightweight laptops that you will be able to find with that specification for under SGD $1200.
If you require coding, i would suggest an i7 model with at least 8GB RAM and an SSD.
If you edit photos or videos, definitely get a laptop with a graphics card. Commonly used ones that is not too pricey is an NVIDIA MX150. If you have more money to spend, you can look at NVIDIA GTX1050, GTX1050TI.
If you want gaming, definitely get better specifications.
For PW, it depends on the group. DS had just finished PW last year. His group either met in the library (where there are computers provided by school) or worked from home. They didn’t even use Microsoft. They used Google docs and Google slides.

Recently, I saw a new product online by the name of EVA Charge Sticker for laptop. I bought one for my child studing in polytechnic. It really help her laptop to prolong battery lifespan and also increase battery usage time while doing her project.

I really liked using that laptop bc it’s super light, weighing around 1.3-1.6 kg? I brought my laptop to sch every day so the light weight helps a lot. Esp for students who keep their laptops in their backpacks, too much weight can give shoulder aches and back problems. Another good thing is that the laptop can be folded 360 degrees. This helps a lot for project works and when presenting to friends in small groups. The laptop is also touch screen, which is very convenient for use, and it is good if students like to take handwritten notes on electronic devices.

So he got the HP laptop…still trying to get the hang of using windows.

DD used mac air and has been operating pretty well for 4 years. No breakdowns or hang except battery easily run low, guess it's due to 'ageing' but overall happy ATB the product.

You can consider MacBook. Because as time goes by, in my opinion, I think that MacBook last longer than another laptop. In fact, they are very easy to use and compatible with iPhone ! It is an advantage if you have iPhone! It makes life so much easier. From my experience, HP and Lenovo are not as durable. So maybe you can consider!

Mac has a higher starting price point but if you average out the cost over the laptop's lifespan, Mac are absolutely worth it. It will outlive most Windows based laptop because of macOS.

However, excel is a major pain for Mac. if you require high level excel functions like pivot table, etc (though unlikely to be an issue in JC), Mac can be an absolute mare.

There is a big store somewhere in Sim Lim Sq called Newstead. We have bought PCs from there before and they seem OK. We now buy from Challenger - my husband likes the extended warranty he can buy from there.
