It is definitely easier to start with piano, since you can teach a child to play a tune almost right away, while for a violin student it will take at least several months to produce decent tone and learn how to play the notes in tune. On top of these, the body and hand positions while playing the violin are times more complicated, compared to the relatively comfortable piano position.

According to my experience, the age of 4 for piano or 4 and a half for violin are the most suitable. Of course, there are exclusions, but the age stated appears to be reasonable for the majority of children. Unfortunately, there are systems and teachers, who suggest that the students start as early as possible. This could only be referred to commercial purposes and not for the students’ benefits. Many examples could support my statement, but it is not that important. No matter when the student starts, provided it is not later then his/her age of 6-7, the crucial factor is the proper teaching. This is what produces the results and not that much the exact starting age.

The youngest student we have for private piano lesson is 4 year old and violin lesson is 5 years old. From my personal experience, I find piano easier to play compared to violin. There are also parents who introduce Ukulele as the first instrument. I hope this helps.

You may want to check our SG Music Lessons. However, I must ask if this is your child’s choice, or yours. If your child is not willing to learn music but forcing him/her to learn, that will demoralise him/her and add stress.

I think the best way to start is to try out a trial lesson(usually free) at the nearby music center and assess whether he/she has passion before investing too much money and time into it.

Also, I suggest a basic keyboard which is more affordable from Giant or Fairprice Xtra to start of with.
