I used topical assessment to teach my DD new topics for Maths. Used to like Andrew Er books, Casco and step by step Maths. Will also let her attempt challenging Maths problem sums. For science open ended question, I made her copy the model answers and underline the keywords. Chinese and English grammar and voca is simply practising as much as she can. From P4/5 onwards, she does not have as much time for assessment as she was busy with her tuition and school projects. Priority is on completing the school work.

Besides doing the assessment, I thought it was important to also go through her mistakes so that she does not repeat them. Depending on the level you child is at, perhaps can focus on the weaker areas first. For eg, I let my DD do more speed questions when she say she is not confident or her topical test results are not ideal.

Eg. does he have problems understanding the concepts, or understanding the questions, or carelessness etc. Just doing more of the same without dealing with the specific issues actually reinforces mistakes. My kids are much older now, but I have one who is weak in Maths. We find that getting her to do a moderate amount each day (fewer than 10 questions) with attention paid to why she made mistakes works much better than just doing a lot. When she gets tired, she is less willing to think and carelessness increases.
