My current sec 1 kid did not have tuition in her primary school days (though I admit I succumbed to kiasuness for a while and tried to sign her up for tuition previously but it only lasted for a few lessons, and then she was off to her own again). I am a FT working mum, the only time I \"coached\" her was when I nagged at her \"have you done your homework?\", \"are you revising your work?\". She relied mainly on her teachers, her friends, her notes, and past year papers. She scored the top 5% (or thereabout) in PSLE last year. I have another friend whose dd also did well with good PSLE scores with no tuition at all (top 10%). My friend also working mum.

So, it is possible to get by without tuition in today's standards. It is a matter of the parents' expectation. It does not matter what the syllabus or curriculum is and whether it has changed. All that matters is the bell curve, ie. how the others do. There is no good or bad about it.

Whether academic achievements is viewed as more important than other types of achievements (eg. skills based) is simply a reflection of the market. My friend also working mum.

So, it is possible to get by without tuition in today's standards. It is a matter of the parents' expectation. Some parents die die want their kids to go to GEP, to go to the top school, to go to the \"best\" school possible. 可怜天下父母心。 With no tuition, we may have a natural bell curve, with some children doing well, and some children doing not so well. With tuition, the bell curve gets skewed, especially towards those who can afford expensive tuition classes.

mommyNg

Reply to Why Singapore is cracking down on 'Tiger Mums' on Fri, 08 May 2015 02:32:10 GMT

jetsetter:

but who in the world needs tuition for A levels?! :siao:

in fact i was just asking someone why A level threads are active here. is it cos our parents weren't connected by internet in the dino age, not that they didn't chat with their peers at kopitiam last time?

Apparently your kids are not studying in JCs.

Why don't you look at the syabullus (wrong sp) n spend a semester or so in a JC as a student before making such comments?

This year is 2015 and not 1995.

zbear

Reply to Why Singapore is cracking down on 'Tiger Mums' on Fri, 08 May 2015 01:18:08 GMT

pirate:

sushi88:
See... it takes a pirate to understand a penguin...

Cos all water beings...

http://images.clipartof.com/thumbnails/1229676-Clipart-Of-A-3d-Pirate-Penguin-With-A-Sword-Royalty-Free-Illustration.jpg\">
....
