Although it may sound hackneyed, my hope is that SG50 marks the cusp of a subtle yet certain shift in our nation's direction.

The previous 50 years and more, consisted of a struggle towards economic survival and attaining stability at all cost. In the next 50 years, whilst continuing to work hard and work smart, my dream is for our nation to be more compassionate, more inclusive, and more of a first-world city. In the way we run our politics and parliament, in the way we treat our foreign workers, in the way we care for the elderly and those less able amongst us.

We press forward, because kicking back and completely relaxing is not an option for us, given our geopolitical reality. But we look around us even as we pursue industry, and we will pull alongside those who fall behind, because that is what it means to be human, and that's solidarity as a nation.

So whilst our nation's 50th year of independence is a year of reflection, not least due to the passing of our founding Prime Minister in March this year, to me, it may also be a year of inflection, as we begin to pursue a better future relevant to our hopes and aspirations. This better future is not necessarily a more economically glorious one, but one in which we can hold our heads up high with regard to the way we treat our fellow-men and foreign workers, and one in which we have a strong assurance of what we stand for, and who we are as a nation, the people of the tiny, all-but-irrelevant, city-state of Singapore.

---------

:congrats:

Toddles won on a basis of 66 qualified Likes from the community. We will also be giving 1000 KiasuPoint$ to the 2nd and 3rd place winners, who are JenJen (59 Likes) and sleavuuuunnnninja97 (31 Likes).

All supporters of the winning post have also received their award of 500 KiasuPoint$. Please check your KiasuPoint$ account for confirmation.

And a big Thank You to all of the writers who spent so much time and effort penning down their thoughts of Singapore, and to those who showed their appreciation by supporting their efforts! We wish we have more than a measly 4 tickets to give away... all top 3 entries are superb! But that was the best we can do for this year. Next year, we'll try to get even more so that more people can get to see the biggest show in Singapore.

ChiefKiasu

Reply to 4 SG50 Actual Day NDP Tickets for the Family on Thu, 30 Jul 2015 04:13:24 GMT

Voting is now closed. From rojak, chilli crab, chicken rice, roti prata to mee goreng, tell me, where else in the whole wide world can u find such a wonderful yummy delciious food ! Where \"eating\" is our national pastime, where many Singaporeans stubbornly prefering to eat our hawker delights over restaurant foods, there is nobody else on Earth as crazy and as proud of us Singaporeans about our food lah!

The Singapore Spirit is also about our \"kiasu-ness.\" From queueing up for hours just to get a plate of your favourite laksa, to \"chope-ing\" our hawker tables with tissue packets and even *ahem* creating a website(with the word kiasu in it's name!) to help parents keep track of their children's education and sending their children to so many enrichment classes to ensure they do not lose out, 'kiasu-ness' is part of our Singapore culture. Where else in the world would you be able to find people who queue because the queue is very long and where else would you be able to see tissue papers on hawker tables! Only in our homeland would we ever see such nostalgic sights!

The Singapore Spirit also embodies our multi-racial and mutli-religious society. Only in Singapore will you ever find a Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian child all happily playing, growing up in the same HDB, where a church can be next to a mosque and a temple and where even our unoffical language \"Singlish\" consists of words from all four cultures! \"Shag,\" \"walau\",\"sianz\", \"goondu\" and our favourite \"lah!\" are words we all grew up with and no where else in the world will we ever find such a \"rojak\" mix of cultures and religions, yet like \"rojak,\" we Singaporeans somehow find a way to make this \"rojak\" mix \"taste so good\"

The Singapore Spirit is also about the care and love we Singaporeans show for each other. Despite what others, even sometimes ourselves, say about Singaporeans being selfish, always complaining, during times of need, we Singaporeans do care. Look at the recent MRT breakdown: the kampung spirit within us was alive as car-owners offered free rides to people who were going in the same directions and staff like those at McDonalds Changi City Point offered free drinks to stranded commutors. Look at the queues at Mr Lee's wake: members of the public turned up to clear the litter, free drinks were offered to people in the line and refreshments were constantly given out day and night. Let others say whatever they may think of us, we as Singaporeans know that deep down our Singapore Spirit is one of compassion. :snuggles:

And lastly, the Singapore Spirit is embodied by our founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He instilled in our forefathers the \"never-say-die\" spirit, that despite all the challenges we face as a little red dot, we never lose hope, never gave up. The strong spirit of independence and the attitude of continued excellence, always improving, always adapting to the changing world around us, these were all qualities that Mr Lee embodied and passed on to us Singaporeans. He painstakingly commited his entire life into the building of our nation, sacrificing his time and his life into ensuring that we Singaporeans had a safe home and a bright future, builiding us up to what we are today. In all likelihood, the Singapore Spirit would not have existed without the contributions of the late Mr Lee.

In conclusion, SG50 is the celebration of all these small little things that make us uniquely Singaporean, this weird wonderful thing known as our Singaporean Spirit.
:boogie: It is our celebration of 50 years of our amazing progress and the celebration for our next 50 years of even more amazing things yet to come. :boogie:

On the 9th of August, I will be watching the NDP parade, whether it will be on the tv or from the seats of the Padang, having this weird sweet sensation deep within my heart, this wonderful feeling which can only be pride.

All I will have to say is this: I am proud, so proud of being a Singaporean

sleavuuuunnnninja97

Reply to 4 SG50 Actual Day NDP Tickets for the Family on Mon, 20 Jul 2015 02:38:53 GMT

Title: What SG50 means to me

I have lived in Singapore since I was 6 years old, and now 32 years on, I can truly say Singapore is MY HOME.

I was born in Sri Lanka and left as a child around the time the ethnic conflict years started. My father, who had been offered an opportunity for work in Singapore, whisked us off to a new life in Singapore. How long we would be there (we didn’t know), how we would fit in (we didn’t know), but we came with all our hopes and dreams for something better.

Now at age 38, with a family of my own, I am living a comfortable and contented life, and as Singapore celebrates her 50th birthday, I celebrate too, for I have in no small way benefited from her love for her people - the chance at a top notch education, a safe place to raise a family, and an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of other Singaporeans I share this special Home with.

So the questions that kept us up at night as we left the familiar behind in 1983 - the uncertainty of how long we’d stay, the doubts over whether we’d fit in - were answered with a resounding YES! I am still here 32 years later, and it’s not just because of the wonderful Singaporean Chinese man (college sweetheart) I walk this journey with, but because like any family and any home you love, you learn to love it unconditionally (warts and all!). I cannot and will not think of living anywhere else.

Thank you Singapore for this great gift of a Home! May you be blessed as you enter the next 50 years of building up this motley crew of a family you can proudly call yours!
