All you need are your hands!

Read the post in its entirety at https://www.bloom.com.sg/sing-along-song-one-little-finger/, and learn a new song to add to your treasure trove of https://youtu.be/AxqDjVFxKW4?si=MPyUCnudefq8D30d for the perfect family bonding.

Toddlers are especially tickled with finger plays because they are at the age where “their greatest need and most persistent drive is to explore the exciting world that beckons them” (Heyge, L. & Sillick. A., 2003). When you are doing the finger play or action song, toddlers want to attempt to copy you, because they want to attain control and mastery of their body movements.
Children need to move, because they learn through movement.
– Lorna Heyge, Ph.D., & Audrey Sillick
To gain mastery of body movement, parents can support their babies and toddlers by practising every action over and over. In doing so, the repetitions strengthen and enhance the the body, mind, and neural connections, which are critical to this stage of child development. Kinesthetic awareness—an inner sense below the conscious level that contributes information about how the body feels as it moves—is invaluable to all learning. As their body become better coordinated, their body also “becomes an expressive instrument with ever higher levels of awareness and complexity” (Heyge, L. & Sillick. A., 2003).

Besides our hands, we also need the right words.
Nursery rhymes and chants are an extremely useful source of repetitive alliteration (the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words) and rhythmic beat, and poetry and songs amplify the music of language. Children need “words to label their experiences so that they can be communicated” (Heyge, L. & Sillick. A., 2003). Thus, repetitive finger plays and songs which combine words with appropriate actions are helpful both musically, and to children’s language development. What is a better way to help children maintain a spontaneous approach to the work of creating language than by making it playful and fun with musical play; let children talk to themselves, make up words and silly sounds for their songs, and this will help them practise the rich phonetic content that leads to shaping speech and listening skills.

Not only does music offer children a means of communication (because it soothes, stimulates response, and focuses attention), music is also a wonderful way to send messages or teach/learn! When children are allowed to take responsibility for their own learning, they gain not only knowledge, but also problem-solving skills, thinking skills, self-confidence, and self-esteem.
Lorna Heyge, Ph.D., and Audrey Sillick, the founders of Musikgarten, understand the benefits of music for babies and young children, and have done extensive research to create their acclaimed Early Childhood Education music programmes Family Music for Babies (FMB) and Family Music for Toddlers (FMT). They advocate for active music-making as a family because they believe that children are innately musical, and children need the immersive and supportive environment to flourish not only as a musician, but holistically as a child all through to adulthood.
Bloom School of Music & Arts is one of the few schools in Singapore to offer these Musikgarten programmes, and we would love for you to discover the magic and wonder of the Musikgarten experience. I will include some ideas for music lessons, and also share the teachable moments for each game. Children will also develop a deep affection for music, and possess the ability to express it. The players walk around the chairs (arranged in a line or a circle) when music is playing. When the music stops, the players have to sit on a chair each. The player without a seat will then be out of the game. The game continues by removing one chair before each round, and the players will play until there is only one champion left.

One not-so-fun part of Musical Chairs is that there will be disputes, especially if two buttocks land on one chair, and neither child wants to give up their seat. Adults have to be prepared to mediate in such a situation. Tantrums aside, playing Musical Chairs is a safe way for children to learn practical life skills such as patience, resolving conflicts peacefully, sportsmanship, and dealing with disappointment.

Lesson ideas: You can teach the concept of beats with Musical Chairs; choose a piece of music with a strong, steady beat, and include the rule that players have to march according to the beat.
-
FREEZE!
This game is another party favourite, and is so simple to play! All you need is some music, and children who are ready to bust some moves!
The rules are simple: While music is playing, players can move or dance freestyle. When the music stops randomly, players have to stop moving, and \"freeze\" in whichever position they stopped at. Anyone caught still moving when the music is stopped, is out of the game. The game then continues in an elimination manner, until someone is declared the winner.

If you think about it, this is as much a strategy game as it is a simple game of Freeze. Smart players will know that it is better to stay grounded (pun intended), lest they get caught off-guard with a foot off the floor! Unless you are good at balancing, it is a good idea to do mainly upper-body movements, to stay on top of your game.

Lesson ideas: Freeze is a Music & Movement lesson in disguise. The music for each round of the game could be of a different genre, and the players have to move accordingly to how they feel about the music.
Not only will children be introduced to various types of music (classical/jazz/pop, to name a few), the children will get to practise directionality (the awareness of space, and the ability to orientate themselves through space) with locomotion. It is also a good opportunity for children to explore their bodies' capabilities (for example, learning how far they can bend backwards or forwards).
It will also be interesting to see how the children interpret that piece of music with movements.
-
Hide & Seek Instruments
Honestly, this idea came from the Hide and Clap scene in the horror movie The Conjuring. The game does not have to be creepy though!
Hide & Seek Instruments follows the general rules of Hide & Seek: There will be a seeker, and the other players will be the ones hiding. For a musical twist, the hiders hold on to a musical instrument each, and they will sound off their instruments after the seeker counts down and shouts \"Ready or not, here I come!\" The seeker then has to find the hidden \"instruments\" (the hiders). After all the hiders are found, this round is over. The players can then take turns to be the seeker, and the game continues.

Lesson ideas: Hide & Seek Instruments will be a great game to practise listening skills, since the seeker has to look out for where the sound is coming from. The game's difficulty level can be increased by changing the objectives of each round; for example in this round, the seeker would have to find only the bells amongst the mix of bells and drums. Do note though, that unless you're playing with gifted musicians, the sounds made by each instrument have to be well distinguishable.
You can also choose to play this game outdoors, so the seeker has to filter out more sounds to be able to find all the hidden instruments.
-
Drop Handkerchief
This game goes by many names, the familiar one being Duck, Duck, Goose. A player goes around the circle to choose a catcher. The chosen catcher has to get up to chase the player, and the player has to run around the circle and sit in the place vacated by the chosen catcher. If the player gets caught before getting to the seat, the player has another go to choose another catcher. If the player manages to get to the seat, the catcher becomes the player, and chooses another person as the catcher.

There is a version played in Mandarin, with the difference being the player drops a handkerchief behind the person the player has chosen. The children seated in the circle will sing this song as the game is in play. This video shows an example of the game that is enjoyed by kindergarteners. This is a great way for non-Mandarin speakers to learn the language, as the song lyrics explain the rules of the game.

Lesson ideas: Fast and slow (tempo) can be a concept to be taught with Drop Handkerchief. While the player is going around the circle to choose the catcher, the players in the circle sing and clap along to the song slowly. When a catcher has been chosen, and he/she is getting up to chase the player, the players in the circle start singing and clapping along to the song faster. This would increase the intensity and excitement for everyone in the game!
-
The Telephone Jingle
I enjoy being a spectator of the Pass The Message game—also known as The Broken Telephone Game—because it is amusing to guess where in the line the message got broken, based on confused looks of the messengers!
It is not that fun to be the messenger though! Especially if you have got a particularly difficult and long message to remember.

The gist of Pass The Message is to pay attention!
In the original game, all the players stand in a line, close enough to hear the message whispered to them, but not so close that other players down the line can hear. The person at the end of the line is the intended recipient of the message. The other players are the messengers. The first messenger passes on a message—usually a funny, uncommon phrase—to the messenger next to him/her in the line. The game continues with the messengers passing the message until it reaches the last player. The intended recipient must then say the message out loud, so everyone can hear how it has, or has not changed from the original message.

Lesson ideas: The Telephone Jingle is apt for listening, and pitching practice.
In this musical version, instead of passing a message in words, players would pass a message in musical notes or musical rhythms! Depending on the players' music level, each messenger can play a musical note or a bar of notes (on a xylophone), or clap out a rhythm, to the next messenger.
The challenge can be increased by allowing each messenger to compose their own bar of notes, and the last person must be able to replicate the melody!
There are some learning points in playing the various versions of Pass The Message. This is a fun way to show how small misconceptions can end up making a huge difference. It also provokes reflection about the consequence of passing on the wrong message, intentionally or not (gossip and rumours). It definitely helps to pay attention to ensure you are relaying the correct message, and this game is good practice for active listening, a skill that is very much needed in the real world.

***

What are your favourite musical games to play? I would automatically belt out the ABCs in the familiar tune of \"Twinkle Twinkle Little Star\", because that was the way I learnt it; music has the wonderful power to help us learn better!

Music plays a major role in young children's development. Music offers children a variety of enriching experiences, regardless of physical, social, emotional or intellectual limitations. Music also offers children the opportunity for support and/or extension of content areas. ¹

https://postimg.cc/MM65Pnxs

Musikgarten is a leader in early childhood music education, with more than 30 years of research on child development and psychology. Bloom School of Music & Arts has adapted the Musikgarten curricula to offer your children the opportunity to develop holistically:

* Family Music for Babies (FMB) Suitable for newborns to 18 month-old toddlers, and even pregnant mothers
* Family Music for Toddlers (FMT) A parent-accompanied programme for children 18 months to 3 years old
Upon completion of the Musikgarten programmes, your child will be ready for individual music lessons, and they can progress with Bloom's Tutti Tots (3-4 years old), and then Tutti Keyboard (4-5 years old) programmes.

Let Bloom School of Music & Arts take your children on their most exciting musical journey yet. Contact us to enquire about our early childhood music programmes, or our individual or group instrumental classes. We hope to nurture your children’s love and ear for music, and set them up for life.
https://postimg.cc/0bBH3yKZ

The creators of Musikgarten, Audrey Sillick and Dr Lorna Heyge, and we at Bloom, believe that
\"Music makes a difference\"
Parents and teachers alike are recognising that music is being valued as part of any child's well-rounded education. We believe that children are innately musical, with the ability to sing and move rhythmically. ²

Research and experience tell us that the earlier a child is in an environment of active music-making, the more likely that child's inborn musicality will be awakened and developed.
- Dr Lorna Heyge & Audrey Sillick

The first 6 years of a child's life are optimal for development. And the first three years are extremely critical, because this is the time intellectual growth occurs most rapidly, and cognitive functions are set. A stimulating environment promotes a child's development physically, socio-emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. ²

**********

I have compiled https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9okytvWLmaMkxVLV31of3g. Let us also discover more about how children learn:

https://postimg.cc/Fd0vZnrb
1. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr & Lois Elhert
The letters of the Alphabet (graphemes) are used to represent phonemes, the smallest unit of sound in a language. Young children associate letters with meaningful contexts; they notice letters in names and in environmental print (on signboards, clothes, for example). Research suggests that children do not learn alphabet letter names in a specific order. The ABC song is used as a strategy to help children reach independence in recognising and identifying letters. Over time, with many purposeful experiences with written language, children will learn to decode unfamiliar words as they read and to spell words as they write (using phonics). ³

One way to encourage children's alphabet learning is to capitalise on their interest. Music and/or videos which children enjoy can get them to notice the alphabet as they sing and/or read (subtitles). And they will definitely talk about it if they are interested! ³

https://postimg.cc/dk9sFSbs
2. The Cooking Pot by Joy Cowley
Levelled books have 3 levels of difficulty ⁴: Easy, Harder, and Harder Still.
The lowest level has
* big fonts, and print is clearly separated from pictures
* few, repetitive words/phrases
* one to two sentences per page
* simple plots
* high frequency words accompanied by content words reinforced with pictures
As the levels go higher, the reading difficulty also increases. Children begin with guided reading (with an adult), and they can select books at their reading level. Over time, with enough exposure and reading practice with the same books, children will be able to read independently. ⁴

A jingle is a short, catchy tune designed to be easily remembered, and usually used in advertising. “The shorter the better, the more repetition the better, the more rhymes the better”, says Tim Faulkner, who explains how commercial jingles work.

With levelled reading books, I pick out repetitive phrases, or look out for rhythmic sentences, and compose a simple melody to sing with. This invites children to sing along, and eventually they remember the words by heart. This eases the transition to reading as children match the lyrics to the words on the book.

https://postimg.cc/HJZzNpxd
3. Puff The Magic Dragon by Peter Yarrow & Lenny Lipton, Illustrated by Eric Puybaret
When I was learning French, I found the best (and most fun!) way to learn vocabulary, remember phrases, and recognise grammatical structure, was through song lyrics. One of my class assignments then, was to translate Pink Martini’s Sympathique. Luckily for me, it is a song I genuinely like, so it was relatively easy for me to complete the task. 10 years later, I still remember the lyrics to the whole song.

“Puff The Magic Dragon” is a special song to me. I first heard it in secondary school. My favourite teacher let us listen to this song, and we were going through the lyrics to identify feelings and emotions. I fell in love with this song, and over time, whenever I heard it, I would get this wave of nostalgia and happiness. Naturally, remembering the lyrics came easily.

Singing helps people learn words and phrases faster. Music is sometimes used as therapy, as shared by Dr. Anne Fabiny in her https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/music-can-boost-memory-and-mood, because it has the ability to reactivate the areas of the brain associated with memory, reasoning, speech, emotion, and reward.

https://postimg.cc/v4jL70SZ
4. We're Going On A Lion Hunt by David Axtell
“We’re Going On A Lion Hunt” is similar to the popular story “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen & Helen Oxenbury. There are repetitive parts which invite children to join in to recite the story. I added the hand actions to aid children in remembering both the vocabulary and the directions “over”, “under”, “around”, “through”. When I read this story to children, it was always a joy to see them read aloud and gesture at these parts of the story.

Songs like \"The Wheels On The Bus\" are always warmly welcome by children because repetition allows them to enjoy the fun experience over and over again. Whether it is a song, a dance, or a story that is repeated, children derive pleasure and enhanced “motor memory”, a memory of actions. ²

Finger plays that are rhythmic such as \"The Finger Family\" are developmentally sound activities that children enjoy. Finger plays not only help children learn about their own bodies, it also helps guide vocabulary and improve their oral language; hand motions and naming at the same time is a double reinforcement through movement and word. Finger plays also assist in self-expression and self-discovery—the growing awareness of how an action should feel while it is happening. ²

https://postimg.cc/hfmSPvWZ
5. Is Your Mama A Llama? by Deborah Guarino & Steven Kellogg
We can learn just about anything through the wonderful medium of books. In “Is Your Mama A Llama”, a little llama goes in search of his mother, and we as the readers, get to learn some information about animals. The illustrations invite children and adults alike to ask questions about the animal mother-child relationship (eg. What is a baby cow called? A calf).

“Is Your Mama A Llama” can be a great book to introduce phonics because of the rhymes, and rimes (word families). Earlier, we learnt that graphemes are used to represent phonemes. When children can choose the duck as an animal whose name begins with a /d/, can identify duck and luck as rhyming words, and can blend individual sounds to pronounce duck, this means that they have phonemic awareness, and developing this skill enables them to read and spell words. ³

In phonics, the emphasis is on spelling patterns instead of individual letters. Sounds can be spelt in different ways, and it is dependent on a variety of factors, including the location of the sound in the word, and the language origin of the words. Children have the opportunity to learn to orally match, isolate, blend, and substitute sounds, and to segment words into sounds, when they sing songs, chant rhymes, play games, and read books rich in wordplay. ³

https://postimg.cc/HcMS8qYm
6. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. & Eric Carle
Recognising and identifying colour seems like a very fundamental skill that we just know. Did you know that colour is a key concept for building early numeracy skills such as counting, patterning, and sorting? In this Eric Carle book, children not only get to learn to recognise colours (by name and colour), they also get to admire the artistic techniques used to create the illustrations. There is a pattern in this book (Animal, Animal, What do you see? I see Animal looking at me), so I created a simple 4-beat melody to invite children to clap/sing along with me.

Mathematics is more than just “listen, copy, memorise, drill”, because, to master basic math skills by memorisation alone is no more doing mathematics than playing scales on the piano is making music. Mathematics should be connected to the real world, and learnt with understanding, so that new knowledge can be built from experience and prior knowledge. We want to invite and empower children to be able to express a mathematical approach instead of solely depending on the teacher to offer the approach. ⁵

There are 4 types of heuristics (methods of problem-solving) that children may use for Math: ⁶
* Guess-and-Check (Trial & Error)
* Visualisation (mental models)
* Solve a simpler problem (extending on something simple)
* Patterning

https://postimg.cc/qhcVPbtk
7. The Oreo Cookie Counting Book by Sarah Albee & Victoria Raymond
Call-and-Respond songs typically have a melody that is repeated in the response, or a short repetitive answer. These type of songs draw everyone into participation quickly, and allow for individual or group responses. ²

I found “The Oreo Cookie Counting Book” at a secondhand book sale, and it became one of my favourite counting books, mostly because of the rhymes and the realistic illustrations by Victoria Raymond. Each page is actually open-ended, inviting children to shout out the answer, to complete the rhyme. Again, I created a melody that is easy to remember.

Earlier I shared that counting is one of the early numeracy skills that young children learn. The best way for children to interact with numbers is not only through pen and paper, but also through the questions of everyday play: for example, “Do we have enough cookies for the whole class?” “How many more cookies do we need?” “Are there fewer cookies or fewer children?”

Only the sequence of counting is a rote procedure. The understanding of counting cannot be forced; children need to make meaning attached to counting. Counting involves two separate skills, 1. count words in order, 2. one-to-one correspondence, meaning each item must get only one count. And before children can understand that the last count word indicates the amount of the set, they need to first learn how to count. ⁵

**********
I hope you have learnt something useful from these information I have shared.
Music is a universal language, and it has been proven time and again that music improves holistic development, and enhances brain functioning. Listening is not just hearing: Listening is a voluntary act of giving full attention to the sound source. Every aspect of learning requires listening, and learning music can nurture this skill. ²
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
Credits:
¹ Creative Arts for Young Children lesson materials by Belinda Seet
² Family Music Music & Movement Series:
Teacher’s Guidebook and Resource Materials Volume 1: Sing With Me & Dance With Me
by Lorna Heyge, Ph.D. & Audrey Sillick
³ Literacy for the 21st Century (4th Ed.) by Gail E. Pianicas are lightweight and portable, and popular in music education, especially in Asia.
A pianica has a musical keyboard--usually two or three octaves long--and a mouthpiece attached to a hole at the side. It is played by blowing air through the mouthpiece; pressing a musical key opens a hole, which allows air to flow through the reed (mouthpiece).
The pianica is a simple instrument to learn and use. Parental involvement is important, because, when the parents participate joyfully in a musical activity, the child will know it, and love it as well. Active music making is more than just about learning songs. It will nurture the musical aptitude of the children, and benefit them at each and every stage of their childhood development.

This is the reason why http://www.bloom.com.sg/ emphasises the importance of early childhood music. Bloom's early childhood programmes offer a comprehensive and sequential plan for the musical development of a child from birth, through beginning instrumental classes. Songs, dances, rhythms and stories are repeated appropriately, building on what each child has mastered, thus making successful learning easier. Class time is always educational, fun and purposeful.

https://s17.postimg.org/705ue3ke7/BLOOM_Early_Childhood_Course_Progression.jpg\">

http://www.bloom.com.sg/musikgarten-program/ programmes for babies and toddlers are designed for parents and children to experience and share music together. Through a wide variety of activities such as singing, dancing, bouncing, and interacting, we want to bring out the musician in every child. Musikgarten is a highly acclaimed early childhood music programme from the USA with 30 years of research on child development and psychology. They are the leaders in early childhood music education – for children and teachers. Through its comprehensive educational programme, children from newborn to 6 years old will develop a deep affection for music and possess the ability to express it.

Our http://www.bloom.com.sg/tutti/ programmes (unaccompanied classes for 3 years old and above) further exposes children to the various genres of music, rhythmic patterns, and important composers. Activities will help your child to nurture their listening skills, attention span, imagination, creativity and self-expression. And at the end of Tutti Tots, students will be able to play simple tunes on the pianica. The child is gradually introduced to the keyboard in the Tutti Keyboard programme. The key components of music learnt in Tutti Tots are reinforced, while keyboard skill is given more emphasis. Children are encouraged to respond to cues, echo short rhythm patterns, identify rhythm symbols and notations, as well as identify and respond to simple scores through percussion playing.
I think when music becomes a natural and joyous part of the child, they will benefit greatly in many aspects of life, such as language, self-expression, concentration, fine motor skills, emotional and social development.
- Bloom's Teacher Irene
If you are interested to learn more about our programmes, visit us at our studio:
Bloom School of Music & Arts LLP

Blk 528 #02-2387
Ang Mo Kio Ave 10
Singapore 560528
(Above Ang Mo Kio Town Council)

Give us a call:
Tel : +65 6458 8854
HP: +65 9681 8242 │ SMS or Whatsapp Only

Or email your interest to
enquiry@bloom.com.sg
with the subject line \"ReferralDenise\"

BloomSchoolSG
