Every school (and every teacher) is different of course. Plus every child is different - some are already quite big and heavy at P1, others are tiny. So my suggestion is to consider the weight (and dimension) of the bag as proportionate to your child's weight to give you a better idea. So if the bag is 7 kg and your child is 21 kg, that is a third of his weight. For a 51kg adult, that would be akin to carrying a 17kg bag of rice spread across half your height.

I am sure there are some schools (and teachers) that take a very active interest in this aspect, but there are many more that don't.

ammonite

Reply to Stationery and School bags on Wed, 15 Aug 2018 08:14:20 GMT

Aurorasea:

How about refills? Because ds1 is of a smaller frame, I did not get ergonomic bag for him. As a result, his regular bags lasted about 1-1.5years before straps or handles got torn, zips spoilt. Very expensive but supposedly better for the back.

The total weight of bag + books should not exceed 5kg. That’s the guideline that my kid’s form teacher uses. She even has a weighing scale in class to check their bags every week!

At P1, we bought the soft ergonomic bag, which is a bit lighter. Needed a proper ergo bag because we walked to school (and yes, I insisted DS carry his own bag - so did the teachers & discipline master, but the maids & grandparents of other kids insisted equally strongly that they wanted to carry  )

At P2, we upgraded to the hard frame ergonomic bag, which is heavier. Not really necessary nor nice to look at.

At P3, we’ll probably use normal Deuter backpack like all the other upper primary kids. More cool hahaha...

Conclusion, all u actually need is a rectangularish backpack that can fit A4 files nicely, otherwise they’ll become kiam chye. The kids really only carry their backpacks from gate to classroom, and vice versa.

Exception is if you’re walking to school.
