More difficult to teach them content to fill their essays. I tend to focus on encouraging them to do proper research on the internet to look for specific examples of the topics that interest them and, most importantly, to read The Straits Times and something like The Economist (print versions, not online).

For the comprehension side, techniques are less important than inculcating the habit of deep reading. When students become proficient at deep reading, a lot of things fall into place including identifying the pertinent points for the summary.

I do believe that for most students grammar needs to be explicitly taught rather than caught.

There are no tricks to GP. There are no special last-minute boot camps. Slow, steady and thorough preparation over 1.5 years is sufficient when guided by a knowledgeable teacher/tutor who customises the approach based on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the particular student.

Joy of Learning 111

Reply to Selecting Pre-University Education Choices on Wed, 20 Jan 2016 06:59:09 GMT

Gxteo:
My case is pretty special . What I can see (based on the limited info you have provided) is that you are an intelligent student strong in math/science but perhaps weak in language. As a math tutor, I can say that getting an A1 in A Maths does show your math foundation is pretty solid.

My advice is to take the new Further Math (should be out in your year), Math, Physics, and one other subject of your choice. Of course, that is provided if you are interested in the above 3 subjects. You should be able to do well if you continue to work hard.

For English, I am not sure if your result is an \"accident\" or because of weak foundation / weak answering technique. I do know students from English-speaking families with English-educated background getting low marks for English because of poor answering technique. I believe that if you read more, focus on writing and answering in the correct style (this is important to score), you should be able to improve on your English. It is easier for students to improve English rather than Chinese in Singapore.

mathtuition88

Reply to Selecting Pre-University Education Choices on Wed, 20 Jan 2016 06:56:22 GMT

I do think that since GP is an examinable subject, there must be techniques to master it although you might not be proficient in English.

After all, we’re all good at taking tests right?

I would go for JC: you are clearly academically-oriented. Well done on the other subjects.

Your English result is anomalous. Try to analyse what happened, and then seek to remedy any shortcomings you identify.

GP in JC is a killer. It is necessary for admission to the local universities. However, I think - please do check as I may not be up-to-date with the latest policies - in the worst case scenario of your not obtaining a good grade in GP you can still be admitted to the local universities via a qualifying English test conducted by the universities themselves; and even if you fail this test, you can still be admitted provided you take a compulsory course in English, which you must pass in order to graduate.

Joy of Learning 111

Reply to Selecting Pre-University Education Choices on Fri, 15 Jan 2016 12:48:33 GMT

It looks like a freak result for English, esp when all other subject results like combined humanities are good.
