Their standard of model comps higher and the child is given a lot of helping words and plot. And there is a draft 2 required which I like ( some centre teachers don’t focus on this which I disagree) the downside is there is not much room of creativity like some said. So if your focus is to see mark improvement in short term and your kid has pretty good memory, their method will work best. We struggle on 30-32 /40 range with another centre and can’t see improvement despite numerous feedback to teacher so end up giving up and move on to WOW.

Whilst at lower primary, they let the child ‘copy’ compo phrases, the tutors guide the young kids with the order of starting, describing & concluding a storyline. The teachers might hv used the examples & explained, but the child may not know how to articulate the intent. Writing it out for some kids is one way to do recall & learn the order of story organizing.

Fr upper Pri, they’ll get the class to generate ideas thro fun & frdly activities based on the topic or pics (as in the past) and thereafter, allow the pupils to look at each other’s ideas & discuss. I think it’s fabulous & sth I wld not be able to achieve if my child learn alone fr text or even if I tutor personally. The element of competitiveness & seeing how others can generate ideas diff fr yours is valuable in team learning.

I rmbr the teacher teaching them how development of stories need to change tenses, etc. So, compo writing can’t be hurried. It’s better to allow the child to be exposed to early writing skills then expect the child to write grand compo overnight. It takes practice to formulate order, put in ideas & watch for all the English usage taught apart fr compo writing. Making sense, reflecting & considering if the storyline will satisfy the topic itself is also a skill besides starting well & ending well. Just some of my thots & past experience with the founder of W@W. So, having read some parents’ sharing here, seems they’ve developed much to sharpen their teaching forms.

The lessons are very much guided and their work follow closely to the model compo. My initial concern is like the rest said, copying. There wasn't much room for creativity. However, my boy enjoyed the lessons and we continue till p6. Come upper primary, they have to add in their own elaboration, own plot bridge, more room for their own writing. We do see the value of the guided writing now as it helps to arm students with many many good phrases and expressions. By doing that, they can then tweet and plug the phrases to their own writing later on. It is better to go to exams with a bank of stories and good phrases in mind..simply no time to think up stories during exams... this is where W@W lessons helps a lot. I guess other centres will do fine too as long as the student revise their stories and phrases regularly. If child is keen, can also self-learn from compo books. W@W model compo is of a higher standard than compo books though. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing.

Just my OWN thought here. I considered compo classes many times in the past and tried a few with my kids and also monitored my nieces and nephews' progress with their own classes.

Compo is ONLY 20% of overall English weightage. If we have to invest so much time and money WEEKLY from P3 to P6 for just the 20% weightage of a subject, is it money and time well spent? There must be a more effective and efficient way. If we are happy to pay for ENJOYMENT, then of course it is different.

I don't agree that there is NO TIME to think up stories during exams. If a child is taught HOW to think and HOW to write, in other words, taught the writing SKILL, then we don't need 4 years of weekly lessons to score for the 20% of English exam. Especially if a child is only P3 and P4, then now is the time to invest in a class that teaches the skill.

Just my own view.

manorway

Reply to Writers@Work on Fri, 19 May 2023 03:14:18 GMT

manorway\" post_id=\"2108968\" time=\"1684433714\" user_id=\"9303:

Why go to lessons to copy sample compo? So I was abit shocked to see that most of the compos she has written so far.. mirrors the sample compo so closely.. she is in P3 now, we sent her for compo classes because she enjoys writing her own stories during her free time.
I have to say she is enjoying the classes though, but the copying of model compos is abit disturbing and kind of defeats the purpose of sending her for classes.
I’m looking for a class that can teach her the various skills and continue to spark that passion in writing, not just for scoring As in class. I find it too many students for hybrid mode lessons for a teacher to focus. Any comments?
Many Thanks in advance!
