Anyone can advise what is the difference between Applied Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistic in NUS?

Applied Mathematics includes Graph Theory, Numerical Analysis, Modelling etc. It is the studying of mathematics and applying to real-world situations like finance/physics etc.

Mathematics refers to pure mathematics. I majored in this (NUS). It can be separated into Algebra and Analysis. The focus and emphasis is on proofs.
Algebra is roughly speaking the continuation of Linear Algebra (H3 Maths), and includes Group Theory, Ring Theory, and Galois/Field Theory.
Analysis is the extension of Calculus, i.e. Differentiation/Integration (learnt in O level A Maths), with emphasis on rigorous proofs. The results in pure mathematics are beautiful, but it can be said to be quite difficult since Singaporean students (including myself) are not very well-prepared in proofs from Primary school to JC.

Statistics is the extension of Normal distribution, Binomial, Poisson learnt in H2 Maths. One would learn more distributions and how to derive / use them rigorously.

My dd din do well for her A level. She got CDD/C, GP-B, PW-A. She is applying NTU-Mass Comm, NUS-FASS and UNiSIM-Marketing with minor via NAA/DA. I'm actually thinking if she cannot manage to get any offer from these 3 U, I would suggest to work part time, continue her community service and retake her H2 n GP this year as private candidate.

If not I really can't think of any option. Any advise is appreciated. :thankyou:

Hi, my reply is a little late but hope I can still help! Ill answer this without regard to the uni, because math across unis around the world are typically split into these two branches.

Basically applied maths is the study of using math to solve real world problems. It uses math to study, explain and predict the real world. In that way it's very closely related to physics too due to mechanics.

I'm not sure whether you mean 'Mathematics and Statistics' or the two separately. I'm not clear on Statistics in NUS but I assume Mathematics on its own refers to pure maths. Pure math is really the study of math for the sake of it. You study the theories and intangible problems of math. You delve into the very basic definitions and learn to understand them. It's really like studying a science. Applied mathematicians will then use the discoveries and theories of pure math to solve real world problems.

Can't really answer the statistics part as I'm unsure, but I think it has the similar separation of pure and applied as well!

Those grades guarantee cannot get into FASS or NTU mass comm on its own. Was she in science or arts stream? What are her Non-academic achievements? If she is from science she may want to try for engineering courses in NTU.

There is still private uni to consider like SIMGE.

Just try applying and think of plan B or C when plan A doesn't work out.

Admissiom wise, ntu invites a levels students with gp grade D and below. For poly students, it depends for both institutions.

For A level applicants ... who qualify for the grades was told \" No interview\" ...[/quote]I believe as long as poly and A level students meet the minimum cut-off, don't think need to go for interviews. The interviews are probably for appeal cases.

In the case of the student I mentioned above, she was a poly grad that just marginally missed the cut-off. But she had a good poly record and even started her own biz whilst in poly (she invented something as part of her poly project). So it's good that NUS recognises her other achievements. Even managed to attain a scholarship.

NTU might have interview if your grades are borderline. SIM has an interview for all full time programmes. Not so sure about NUS.

NO interviews for Biz for NUS n NTU...Not sure abt SIM...

But for SMU...ALL courses required applicants to go through interviews...written as well as face to face interviews...
The indicative grade profiles shown are for the shortlisting of applicants for interviews...
Whether applicant is selected or not would very much depends on the performance during the interviews...
The prof at the talk said that they wont even know the applicants' grades or which school u are from ... during the interviews...
It would only shows yr Name stand ...
